確かにマハビシュヌ・オーケストラの初期作品における爆発的な勢いと、崇高な精神性の世界という部分は、正直、どこまで個人的に判った(または判ったつもりになっている)のか心許ない面は多々あります。
本作では、その初期メンバーは既にグループを去っており、J.マクラフリンは新進のクロスオーバー・バイオリニストであるジャン・リュック・ポンティを向かえ、またドラムには(後年になってプロデューサーとしても名を馳せる)ナラダ・マイケル・ウォルデンが参加。
ロンドンフィルをフィーチャーした事で、音の表情はそれは豊かでカラフルになった事は間違いないでしょう。また、オリジネーターではないにせよ、まだまだエポック的な感触が色濃く扱われる時代ではなかったかと思います。
とは言え、極個人的には初期2作を越える事にはならなかったのではないかと思っています(無論、J.マクラフリン自身が"超越"することを一位においていたかどうかは判りませんが)。

高校時代、擦り切れるほど聞きました。おかげで「俺はこんなに好きだが、客観的に言って、本当にこれは凄いのだろうか？」という疑問が常にありました。だいたい似非天才というのは30年もたてば化けの皮がはがれるもんですが、32年たって今いえます。「これは少なくとも当時としては大傑作である。マクラグリンってやっぱりまともじゃない」と。その現代的な響きは今も最先端なレベルです。ロンドンフィルはその壮大な世界観を表現するには最適な交響楽団でありました。ギタリスト・マクラグリンを堪能するなら別なのがいいでしょうけどね。
