１９３０年代を舞台にした、若旦那と娼婦の悲恋と、５３年後に黄泉の世界から彼を捜すためによみがえった娼婦の幽霊の物語が、二重構造になっています。心中したのに、黄泉の国でまっていても若旦那が降りてこないので、よみがえって、新聞社に尋ね人の広告を出しに来た幽霊と新聞社に勤める若い夫婦が、若旦那探しに協力するのです。若旦那がレスリーで、娼婦がアニア・ムイ。色とりどりのチャイナ・ドレスに身を包んだ娼婦たち、中庭のある娼婦館のインテリア、赤い色彩、阿片を吸う人物たちのトローンとした瞳。３０年代の世界は、総てが美しく、退廃的です。時を越えた娼婦の真実の愛を描こうとしたのだと思いますが、いかんせん、現代の香港の話がチープな感じがしてしまう。これが、チェン・カイコーあたりの文芸映画なら、３０年代の部分だけで、映画を成立させていたと思うのですが、そこがＢ級テイスト溢れる香港映画！よけいなことをやってしまうというか・・・そういう香港らしさは、嫌いではないのですが。現代によみがえったアニタ・ムイの立ち振る舞いが、一人だけ、しなを作っていて、歩き方や振り返り方まで、いるだけで「あの人、ちょっと違う」って思わせてくれます。すごく色っぽい。レスリーの若旦那は、もうこれぞレスリーって感じ。パオを着て、オールバックにした、「ハンサムモード」で、まだレスリー自身も若かったところが、世間知らず、親には逆らえない、でも、ドツボにはまった恋は我慢できない・・・っていう若旦那にぴったりです。それにしても、２００３年は、レスリーと彼を哥哥と呼ぶアニタが亡くなってしまい、「兄妹」共演としてみると、とてもさびしい気持ちになりますね。

正直いって、物語や登場人物に
あまり興味をひかれませんでした。

アニタ・ムイに感情移入できなくて、
中盤、少し飽きてしまった所もありました。

ラストシーンも、え〜って感じで、
なんだか不満が残ります。

でも、最初の娼館シーンは美しくて
なんとも言えない雰囲気がありました。

レスリー・チャンの退廃的な美しさ。

それが、この映画の１番の魅力でした。
