93年発表のこのアルバムは、フェアチャイルドのオリジナルとしてはラストアルバムにあたります。この時点で、ボーカルのＹＯＵは、ダウンタウンの「ごっつええ感じ」に出演しており、その特異なキャラとへてんこな声に、「誰なんやこいつは」みたいな注目を浴びていました。

その番組の主題歌M14"きらいだよ"、ロッテリアのCMソングだったM15"夏のスパイ"は、彼ららしい実に洗練されたポップソングです。主に作曲を担当していた戸田誠司という方は、ポップ職人ともいうべき音の魔術師で、誰もが琴線に触れるような美しいメロディーとアレンジも施せるのですが、奇抜な音遊びや捻りのあるポップな実験も大好きです。このアルバムにおいても、架空のラジオをイメージし、短いジングルなど曲間に挟み、良くも悪くもバラエティーに飛んだアルバムになっています。
そして、もう一つのこのバンドの特徴が、YOUの歌詞です。この人、TVでは先の展開や場の空気を読む、頭の良さが見て取れて、作家性の強い歌詞を書きそうなのですが、実際は、ほぼテーマが一貫しています。それは彼氏にふられたり、コンプレックスで自分に自信の持てない人たちが、「ええじゃないか」の踊念仏みたいに、開き直り明るくいっちゃえという内容です。それでも本当にリアルに悲しいシチューエーションだったり、M16"くじらのまごむすめ"のようにシュールな設定だったりするので、涙あり笑いありなのですが、「ええじゃないか」的に吹っ切っていこうという姿勢は常に滲み出ています。

このアルバムを最後にフェアチャイルドは解散してしまうわけですが、もっと活躍して欲しかったバンドです。
超音波ボーカルといわれたYOU、テクノの魔術師といわれた戸田、場違いなメタル系ギターの川口の３人が構成する世界は、世界的に見ても確固たる世界観を確立しつつあると思っていたのですが、結局、バンドとしては売れ線にどっかり乗ることなく終わってしまいました。
このラストアルバムは、最高傑作と名高いUKULELEと同じくらい評価の高いアルバムだったのですが、解散してしまった今思うと、川口の存在感はやはり薄まってしまっていた感は否めません。一番好きなメンバーだったのですけど。
ラジオに似せたキャッチを挟みながら軽妙に進行していくこのノリはUKULELEと同じで、なおかつよりキャッチーなメッセージをもつ曲が並んでいます。
世間ではミスチルやB’zが人気を集め、女性ボーカルといえば宇多田ヒカル、といった世代でしたが、バンドとして邦楽で唯一興味を持って追いかけたのが、フェアチャイルドでした。
若い人には、このアルバムと「UKULELE」をぜひ聞いていただき、邦楽の持つ可能性というものをぜひ知っておいていただきたいと思います。
彼らほど、J-POPというものを具現化した存在はなく、これだけの年月を過ぎても、なお色あせることがありません。

そして最後に。川口さんは、いまもギターを続けているのでしょうか？
ライブビデオのパフォーマンスに魅せられたファンの一人として、再びお目にかかる日を楽しみにしています。
