今やＣＤも手ごろな価格でベスト盤が多くリプレス企画されている昨今。中島みゆきも多くの数枚組等のベストがリリースされている中で、１０年以上も前にリリースされたこのベスト盤の割高感は拭えないと思う。選曲数も１３曲と彼女のキャリアを考えれば無謀かもしれない。

しかし選曲は中期以降に偏っているものそれが逆に珠玉揃いの作品集に仕上がっている印象だ。例えば１・８等は自他共に認める知名度だろうが、６・９・１０・１１等知名度はそこそこに、しかしながら聴き応えのある楽曲となっており、曲が少ないながら選曲自体は中々だと思う。「まつりばやし」はファンでなくても１０年くらい前に印象的なＣＭと叙情的アコースティックな曲で自覚していなくても脳裏に刻まれている人も多いのではないだろうか？

また、変則的な側面として柏原の「春なのに」工藤静香「黄砂に吹かれて」をセルフカバーしており、特に「春なのに」を聞くだけでも価値があると思う。彼女の場合ベストとセルフカバーを複合的に組み合わせたＣＤはそんなに無いと思うので、そういう観点で見れば聴く余地は多分にあると思う。また両得取りをしているという点で、中期の曲を知りたいと手軽に考えているリスナーには好適かもしれない。

現在は廃盤になってしまったベストアルバム。(発売は'92年)
80年代までの曲を中心に選曲されており、初期から中期の名曲が目白押し。ただ、オリジナルアルバムと比べると、アルバムとしてのストーリー性はもちろん希薄なので、中島みゆきさんの本来の良さを味わいにくいことは否定できない。

「時代」も「歌姫」も「世情」も名曲だが、他のアルバムで聴くことはできる。だがシングル「御機嫌如何」にカップリングされ、他のアルバムに収録されなかった「シュガー」は本当に良い曲だと思うのだが。この曲が入っているという意味でも、このアルバムは貴重であると思う。手元にあって本当に良かった。

と書いていたら
「シングルズ2」に「シュガー」が収録されていました。本作は役割を終えたとの判断での廃盤であったようです。

「大吟醸」が出る前は、「孤独の肖像」までのＡ面コレクション、
「Best Selection」とこの「Best Selection 2」の３枚のベストがありましたが、
すべて「大吟醸」に集約されて廃盤になってしまいました。
しかし、「大吟醸」も入れて、私はこのベストアルバムが一番好きでした。
必須の名曲「涙」「あした」「黄砂に吹かれて」「Maybe」「歌姫」も入っていましたし、
アルバム未収録の名曲「シュガー」もはいっていました。
地味なのに本当に素晴らしい「まつりばやし」入っていますし、
「時代」も「わたしの声が聞こえますか」のアルバムヴァージョンで、
私の一番好きなヴァージョンでした。

廃盤になってとっても残念です。
