　映画「ライトスタッフ」とTVドラマ「南北戦争物語 愛と自由への大地」の２作品の音楽(どちらも映画「ロッキー」等の音楽で知られるビル・コンティ作曲・指揮)をカップリング収録したオーケストラ音楽のアルバム国内盤です。
　“North and South”は製品上は「南軍と北軍」と印刷されていますが、本ＣＤ発売時点で既に上記の邦題で放映済(NHK-BS2)でしたので、メーカー担当者がよほど不勉強だったと見えます。
　
　注意しなければならないのは、どちらの作品の音楽もオリジナル・サウンドトラックの演奏(実際に劇中で使われた演奏)ではなく、全曲が、当アルバム用に編曲して新録音された交響組曲ヴァージョンであることです。
　オリジナル・サウンドトラックでお探しの方は、「ライトスタッフ」の方は映画「ベスト・キッド」の音楽とカップリング収録のサントラ盤ＣＤが出てますし、「南北戦争物語 愛と自由への大地」の方は、本アルバムの原盤と同じアメリカのVARESE SARAVANDEから、2008年3月3日に４枚組2,500セット限定盤のＣＤが発売になりましたので、そちらをどうぞ。
　
　それを納得の上で聴いてみると、アルバム用の編曲ということで、若干オリジナル・サウンドトラックの演奏よりもまとまってスッキリした構成に感じられ、音楽単体として聴く分にはオススメです。
　ジェミニ計画時代の米ソの宇宙開発競争と超音速機開発への挑戦を描いたノンフィクションを原作にした「ライトスタッフ」では、劇中にギュスターヴ・ホルスト作曲のクラシック「組曲『惑星』」が流れますが、その「惑星」のメロディーを変化させたヴァリエーション音楽が何曲か入っていて、思わずニヤリ。ビル・コンティによるオリジナルのエンディング音楽もドラマティックで素晴らしいです。
　ＳＦ作家でもあるジョン・ジェイクスの歴史小説３部作を豪華キャストでドラマ化した「南北戦争物語 愛と自由への大地」は、まずテーマ曲の壮大さに圧倒されます。同じ南北戦争を扱った映画「風と共に去りぬ」の有名な「タラのテーマ」にも引けをとらないドラマティックな音楽で、昨今では日本のTVのバラエティー番組でも、感動的なシーンによく使われています。
