独特の世界観を持ち、今なお怪しい魅力を放ち続けるジュネ率いるオートモッド。時が経とうとも彼らの音が色褪せる事はない。ベストは幾つか発売されていますが、初めて買う方には収録曲等からも今作をオススメします。 尚、彼らは、1999年にAUTO-MOD1999名義でアルバムを発表しているが、楽曲スタイルは大きく変わってしまった。

日本のポジティヴパンク・ゴシックロックの大御所、ジュネ率いるオートモッド。私はこのベスト盤から入ったが、いきなり「僕がこの手で殺したあなたは遠い昔の僕の姿だった。あなたは僕であり父でもなく母でもなくましてや国家の夢ではなかった」などと歌い始めるのだから「何だ、この奇態な世界は！」とかなり衝撃を受けた。「私はずっとこういう音楽を探してたんだ！」と心震えた。妖艶で粘っこい歌声に乗せ、猥雑さ・狂気・芸術性が渦巻く倒錯的・耽美的な詩世界が迫り、強烈に想像力を刺激される。ただ、今思うと「レクイエム」と「時の葬列」が入ってないのは不満。
「ザ・ライフ」は中近東風の曲調、美しく流れるピアノ。幻想国家、前世の記憶、近親相姦、意識の拡大…怪しすぎる神話的世界を情緒不安定に歌う。「カニバル・オブ・ラヴ」はサックスが舞い妖しく煌びやか。死と恍惚の愛。未発表曲「夢遊病者」は陽気な曲調だが内容は二重人格、殺人鬼。「スメル」は陰鬱。貴女の匂いが母に似ていることが、僕の匂いが父に似てゆくことが…異様な詩世界。狂おしい歌唱と語りが圧巻。「サディスティックドリーム」は軽快な曲調にメロウなサックスが独特の陰影を与え、歪んだ愛を酔いしれ歌う。薔薇、ムチ、蝋燭、ロープ、黄金色の液体。「フレンド」は暗く閉塞的。サビだけ妙に明るくなるが、絶望的な詩との落差で逆に不気味。愛してる…愛してる…それなのにこの苛立ち、アア〜！最後、病的に高まっていく歌と叫びに鳥肌立つ。「アイデンティカル・ナイトメア」はヒトラーの幻想に憑かれた少年。私は貴方、貴方は私。鋭いステップで踊るようなギターソロに興奮！「リアライズ」はベースが前に出る。詩が良い。「デストピア」は総ての昼に圧殺された影たちの集う、さかしまなる理想郷。熱狂し甲高く歌い叫ぶラストはカッコよすぎ！「イースタニア」は哀愁漂う大作バラード。「伝説」は1や6と同じくEASTANIA収録曲らしい奇怪さ。

レクイエムを聴いてもっと、ＡＵＴＯ-ＭＯＤを知りたくなり、購入しました。結果はもう完璧はまりました。特にＤＥＡＴＨＴＯＰＩＡ、夢遊病者は絶品です。布袋寅泰のギター最高です。全曲ベースはＰＥＲＳＯＮＺの渡辺貢、いいですよ。元氷室京介のサポートの友森ショウイチのギターもいいです。言うことなしの１枚でした。
