多数の音楽ソースを暴力的にコラージュする手法で一躍注目されたのが、ジョン・ゾーン率いるネイキッド・シティ。約12年前、ファースト・アルバムのリリース前に収録されたこの初出ライヴ音源を聴いても、腕利きミュージシャンたちによる壮絶な曲芸的パフォーマンスにあらためてめまいを覚える。剥き出しの音が空間を裂きまくっていて痛快この上ない。しかし、おおざっぱに言うと、グラインドコアの痙攣ビートとルパンのサントラっぽい軽薄ソウル・ジャズが交互に出てくる感じで、すべての瞬間はゾーンの徹底したダンディズムによって野卑なジョークに変換されている。だから実はここには、ハードコアともシリアスとも言い切れない、微妙に笑える情報の渦があるのみなのだ。肉体的な超絶技巧にごまかされてしまいがちだが、そのシビアな情報等価主義には彼らの醒めた視線が読み取れるはず。そのように批評的な面もあるが、あまり持ち上げず、ときに失笑も交えながら楽しむべき音だと思う。 (橘淳之介) --- 2002年05月号
