西アフリカのベニン出身で、現在はパリとブルックリンを拠点に活動しているアンジェリーク・キジョー。前作では、米国のジャズ/R&B系のミュージシャンをゲストに招き、アフリカ音楽とアフリカン・アメリカンの音楽の融合を試みていたが、今回はブラジルのバイーアの音楽に接近している。具体的には、カルリーニョス・ブラウンやヴィニシウス・カントゥアリアとの共作曲があり、ジルベルト・ジルのカヴァーも収録。ただし、アルバム全体は折衷主義に基づくモダンなアフロ・ポップ集といった感じで、この人らしい仕上がりだ。 (渡辺亨) --- 2002年05月号

彼女の名前すらしらなかった僕は、Herbie Hancockの「Possibilities」で彼女の歌声を知り、今この「ブラック・アイヴォリー・ソウル」を何回も聴いている。
調べると、彼女の祖国象牙海岸のベナンには、ブラジルのバイーヤからの住民が多く住み着いている。
彼女のルーツの１つには、この奴隷としてブラジルに行った黒人達が
「異国」で発展させてきたバイーヤ音楽があるのは間違いないだろう。
そして他のルーツは、アフリカン・ミュージックと植民地ベナンにかつて残されたフランス文化。
彼女のこのアルバムは、ネイティブなアフロ・ミュージックではなく、
上記の要素やラテン音楽まで消化して、洗練されたものになっている。

アメリカで過日リリースされた「Ｄjin　ＤJin」というアルバムのクレジットを見ると、
カルロス・サンタナ、 ピーター・ガブリエル、ブランフォード・マルサリス、
そして彼女と同郷の超スーパーノバ、ギタリストのリオーネル・ルエケ等が参加し、
ベナン音楽を基盤にしたものになっているようだが、
これだけのスタッフが集結したのであれば、どんなアルバムになっているのだろう。

アンジェリークの音楽は、クロス・カントリー的に拡散したり、
高密度のエアーを閉じこめて収縮したりして、大きく呼吸をしている。
１０年後にはどんな音楽を披露してくれるのだろう。

また楽しみなアーティストが一人増えたのが嬉しい。

アフリカンなパーカッションのリズム、大地に響くような伸びやかな歌声に洗練されたサウンドがミックス。わたしにとって、そのメロディとサウンドがとても新鮮でした。そして、歌詞はフレンチ？それもよかった。歌えないのが残念だけど。
いろいろなタイプの曲が入っていますが、特に14曲目の曲が気に入り、何度も聴いてます。ぜひ聴いてみてください。
