1986年当時、ア・カペラという言葉は合唱愛好家にとって馴染みのあるものでしたが、一般の音楽ファンには縁遠いものでした。この『CHARMING』は8曲22分という短い収録ですが、実に魅力的なハーモニーを感じられるア・カペラを中心とした編集で、スターダスト・レビューのコーラスの実力を遺憾なく発揮したアルバムです。

メイン・ヴォーカルの根本要の中性的な声質を持ったリードも冴えています。何回繰り返し聴いても飽きない魅力溢れる声質です。スタ・レビが今日まで２０年以上第一線のバンドとして活躍している理由の第一が根本要の音楽性にあると思っています。もっともそれを支えるメンバーの安定感にも驚かされますが。プロのミュージャンだからといって美しいハーモニーを奏でられるということがほとんどないのは様々なグループのアルバムを聞けば分かることです。この『CHARMING』を初めて聴いた時の驚きと感動は筆舌に尽くせぬほどで、今もその当時の新鮮な感覚で受けとめています。

どの曲もよく練られたアレンジで、坂本九の「上を向いて歩こう」のアレンジもユニークでいながら、原曲と不慮の事故で亡くなった坂本九へのリスペクトも感じられます。

松田聖子のヒット・ナンバー「Sweet Memories」も1950年代に流行ったドゥワップ・スタイルで歌われています。少し黒っぽいアレンジと伸びやかなハーモニーが原曲の魅力を損なうことなく鮮やかに歌われています。

「踊りあかそう(I Could Have Danced All Night)」「星に願いを(When You Wish Upon A Star)」「雨に歌えば(Singin’ In The Rain)」のようなスタンダード・ナンバーを聴けば、その実力振りが見事に伝わってきます。嬉しくなるような完成度だと思います。

コンサート以外では、このＣＤでしか聴けないアカペラがいっぱい。「上を向いて歩こう」は聴いててなごみます。
