　コスタ・ガブラス、イブ・モンタン（彼は後に転向するが）を始め、フランスの左翼民主系映画人が多数結集した政治サスペンスの秀作。冒頭、某独裁国家の警察幹部達の会合で、コミュニストを害虫に例えて、繁殖する前に駆除するべきと力説する長官の言葉がコワイ。この後、民主化を説く左翼のオピニオン・リーダーが暗殺され、警察の上層部が事件に関与していた事が分かるが、、、。極めて政治的な映画だが、良い意味で通俗的な為、筑紫哲也のニュースショーや、今は無き反権力スキャンダルマガジン「噂の真相」を見たり読んだりする感覚で楽しめる。作り手側の政治的スタンスが明快な為、警察権力が見事なまでに愚弄されるが、結局、国家権力を甘く見たらイカンとの厳しい現実が待っている。映画のタイトルの本当の意味が分かるラストは、真に抑圧、差別からの自由と解放を願う人々にとって感動的であるが、現実問題としての共産主義の終焉と、左翼勢力の衰退が著しい今日、その言葉は重く、苦い。

今まで見た数千本の映画の中で最も笑えた映画だが、映画館を出たときは背筋が寒くなっていた。
トランティニャンが演じた予審判事は、その後、軍事政権を倒した後のギリシャ大統領になり、この映画の関係者も何人かがこの政権に参加したと聞く。

ジャック・ペランが制作し、イブ・モンタンはじめ多くの名優たちが無給覚悟で参加したこの映画は、現実の世界も変えたのである。
映画館で10回見て、ビデオを2本買い、DVDも買ってしまった。

　この映画を観るといつの映画なんだろう？と思ってしまう。製作はなんと１９６９年。３０年以上も前になるんですね！！　ある日、暗殺計画の予告がありながらも、核兵器反対の立場をとる博士は、何者かにより公の場で暗殺されてしまう。若き予審判事が、新聞記者の協力を得て真相解明に奮闘する。政治絡みだと判明し、ストーリーは意外な終結を迎える。コスタカブラス監督の素晴らしい監督ぶりと、脚本。そして音楽が映画をさらに際だたせている。サスペンスの中にも笑いの要素も含まれていて、この映画を一度観るとまた観たいという気分にさせられる。フランスを代表する名優、イヴ・モンタン、ジャン＝ルイ・トランティニャンとキャストも豪華。ちなみにタイトルの「Ｚ」とは古代ギリシア語で「彼はまだ生きている」の意味になるのだとか。
