茹だるような暑さを体感する前半部、ニトロを運ぶ後半部（冒頭のシーンはサム・ペキンパーの「ワイルドバンチ」に受け継がれる）、
舞台は劇的に変化するが緊密に繋がっている。
何から何まで懇切丁寧に説明してくれる現在の箱庭的映画を期待すると失望するだろう。
白黒の画面の向こうには南米の荒野が広がり、人間一人一人が確実に生きている。
そして彼らが捉えられた虫のように必死に生きようともがく様が鮮明に描き出される。
ラストの解釈は様々あるだろうが、一種の爽快感さえ漂う劇的なものだ。
これが映画だとしか言えない最高の一本。

金がなければ抜け出せない吹き溜まり達の町。主人公のイブモンタンが大切にしている宝物は、パリの地下鉄の切符。油田へニトロを運んで、パリに戻ることを夢見る男の浪漫。４人の男達が、危険と恐怖の報酬を得ようと挑戦するが、それを手にするのは誰か。
子供の頃に見たこの映画が、自分の人生を変えたような気がする。リメイク版の方は、全体のストリーが似ていても、まったく似て非なるもの（リメイクは大失敗作、元の面白さがわかっていない）。南米油田での危険なニトロ運びの恐怖の中で、握り締めたメトロの切符からパリの香りを感じる人に見て欲しい。
イブモンタンも、彼の歌「枯葉」も知らない世代が多いかも知れなしが、男の浪漫を感じて欲しい。

　この映画は、全てのアクション映画の始まりと言っても良いのではないだろうか。主人公マリオは仲間の三人と共に山火事を爆風で吹き飛ばすため、少しの振動でも大爆発を起こすニトログリセリンを現場まで運ぶ・・・

　一触即発の緊張感が伝わり、観客も緊張する。これこそまさにアクション映画の至高ではないだろうか。それは随所に挿入されたインサートシーンによるものだろう。『映画を監督で見る』という事を始めて私に教えてくれた映画である。

　さらに面白い発見をした。それはこの映画の主人公と登場人物に、マリオとルイジという人物がいることだ。そしてルイジは、髭を伸ばし小太りである。その姿はまるで、某ゲームソフトの主人公そのものであった。
