快活な「英雄」です。第２楽章の「葬送行進曲」もひどく深刻にならず、充実した満足な一生を回顧している感じです。フリッッチャイの指揮する他のベートーヴェンの交響曲（第５番、第７番、第９番）は渾身の熱演ですが、こちらにどこか余裕が感じられ、オーケストラの名手達とアンサンブルを楽しんでいる印象を受けます（決して、手抜きというわけではありません）。
1958年のアナログ・ステレオ録音ですが、暖かみのある輝かしい音質で、当時とすれば超優秀録音といえるでしょう。ただし、第５トラックの「レオノーレ序曲」にマスターテープに起因すると思われる、アナログ・レコードをかけている時の針の音ようなノイズがあります。

大変すばらしい名演だと思います。
ただし、４楽章に数カ所ノイズあり
私には少々つらかったです。他の部分
は完璧なのに、不思議なほど４楽章に
集中しています。私の買ったデイスク
だけの現象で、他の方は大丈夫なので
しょうか？

　1958年録音、フリッチャイが亡くなる少し前、40代半ばの名演です。全体に緻密に構成され、一音をもゆるがせにしない姿勢が伝わってきます。特に第2楽章葬送行進曲は素晴らしく、フーガの部分の高貴さと壮麗さは格別です。10人以上の他の指揮者の演奏と聞き比べましたが、単独峰のようで、しいて同じスタジオ録音で次を挙げればクレンペラー、そしてジュリーニでしょう。この第2楽章は、クレンペラーのハイドンの第104番交響曲ロンドン（ハイドン:交響曲第102番&第104番）の第2楽章に通じるものを感じます。
　1914年生まれで、ジュリーニと同じ年、カラヤンが数年お兄さんのフリッチャイですが、もう少し長生きしていれば、どこまで行ったのかとついつい考えたくなります。
　ステレオ初期の作品ですが、定評のある同じBPOとの第9交響曲と同時期の録音で、両者ともディーテールまで鮮明な録音のすばらしさにも驚かされます。
