主人公はナチス政権下でのフランス人捕虜として、したたかに生き抜く。恨んだり恨まれたり、子供や動物を愛する一人の人間として、さらに大人の男としての一面も描かれている。極端に善人でもなく、かといって悪人でもない。黒白つけがたい、複雑な人間が、実によく描かれている。
せりふは少ない。ジョンマルコビッチだからこそ、この複雑な人間を描くことができたのだと思う。あとのことを思わず考えこんでしまうラストシーン。印象に残る。

ナチスを極端に良くも悪くも描いていないところが良い。映像は全体的に美しく、ナチスの軍装、儀式の美しさもきっちり描いている。あざといナチス批判もあるが、それをもってしてもありあまる美しさがある。
当時これを生で見ていた人が熱狂したのもうなづける気がする。

『ブリキの太鼓』に匹敵するシュレンドルフの力作。ジョン・マルコヴィッチとしても畢生の名演であり、この映画俳優が現在一頭地抜き出た存在であるあることを確信させるものがある。
今後この寡作の監督には、たとえばフランスのコラボラトゥールの知識人を題材にした作品を撮ってもらいたい。フランス人ミッシェル・トゥルニエの原作を映画化したところからも、その方向性が模索されているのではないだろうか。常に民衆の物語を描いてきたシュレンドルフであったが、テーマとして＜ナチスに協力した知識人＞を描けるのは他にはいないと思われる。
