5年前、1997年12月15日に始まった第一章。
自分を避け続ける美栄子に、博文は道路をはさんで想いを告げる。
博文 「（手話とセリフ）わかったんだ。 俺は、君が…武田美栄子が好きなんだ 耳のことなんか関係ない」
美栄子 「」
博文 「（手話とセリフ）俺と…俺と結婚してください」

子供の出産に悩む1998年10月1日の第二章。

夜の道、美栄子の実家からの帰り道、公園にたたずむ姿を見かけた博文は、美栄子に問いかける。
博文「（手話とセリフ）人間の幸せって、どうやって生まれてきたかで決まるんじゃないよな…どうやって生きてるか、で決まるんじゃないのかな」
美栄子「…」

博文「（手話とセリフ）君にはしてやれないことがある。でも君だからしてやれることだってたくさんあるんじゃないのかな」

子供と向き合った1999年10月7日の第三章。
授業参観の日。手話を披露しながら作文を読む千鶴を、緊張の面持ちで見守る博文と美栄子。

千鶴「（手話とセリフ）私は、お母さんは可哀相じゃないと思います…お母さんはきれいだし…
それから、怒るとお父さんよりもっと怖いです。でも、お父さんはお母さんのことが大好きです… 私もお母さんが大好きです」
美栄子のナレーション 「聞こえたよ、千鶴。耳では聞こえないけど、私の心では聞こえるの。あなたの元気な声が聞こえたよ」

家族で支えあった2000年10月5日の第四章。
博文「（手話とセリフ）やめちゃおうかな、あの会社」
苦悩して、そうつぶやく博文に美栄子は自分の思いをつづった手紙を渡す。

美栄子のナレーション「私はずっとまわり道ばかり歩いてきました…でも回り道したって、ちゃんとたどりつくって、私は知ってるから…
だから博文がどんな道を選んでも、それがどんなにまわり道の人生でも、私は平気です」

そして、2001年12月26日の最終章。

美栄子のナレーション「私は気付きませんでした。でも、きっと博文は心配になってしまったんだと思います。もし自分がいなかったら…
私や千鶴はどうなるんだろうと…心配になってしまったんだと思います」

何回見ても菅野美穂や武田真治の演技に感動して涙が出ます。千鶴役の子供のとっても上手で素敵な家族です。日頃私達が身近に感じている音というものの大きな意味を考えさせられます。

このドラマはオンタイムでは見ていない。
「手話」に興味を持ち、何かないかと友人に尋ねたところ、
教えてもらったドラマ。
第一章から最終章までの５話。
一気に見るには辛かった。
聴覚障害者美栄子は、現代社会における視聴者自身なのかも知れない。
周囲とは関わりがあるとはわかっていても孤独感を感じることがある。

それは、美栄子の状況と同じではないだろうか。

なんにしても、美栄子（菅野美穂）の泣き顔が印象に残る。
その涙の意味は、１回ごとに若干違うだろうけど、
美栄子を支える博文（武田真治）や千鶴(谷口舞）、
そして見守る両親や友人達に感謝する気持ちに変わりはないだろう。
