故･深作欣二監督が同名小説を映画化したのが本作｡
作品設定はやや過激で妄想じみた印象があるものの､
近代日本の危うさと追い詰められた人間の恐ろしさが随所に散りばめられています｡
徹底したスパルタ教育ながら､キャストを思いやる力強さに満ちた深作監督の
過剰で大胆､観るものを虜にする卓越した演出技法が唸ります｡

過激描写ばかりが注目されがちですが､
制御室へのハッキング､過去のプログラム戦争の生き残りを当て馬として投入したりと
箱庭での戦略性に満ちたシナリオ描写と怒涛の展開は見事としかいいようがありません｡


　少年犯罪が乱発する昨今､子どもの粛清のために儲けられた
　BR法規定に基づき､無人島にて戦いを強いられる中学生達｡
　楽しい修学旅行のはずが､一変して絶望の地獄絵図に｡

　ある者は悲観し､
　ある者はみんなの協力を仰ぎ､
　ある者達は協力しあって建物に篭城するが･･･？

　最後の一人になるまで3日間の歪んだ箱庭戦争は終わらない｡


過激描写が嫌な方は視聴を回避するべきでしょう｡(ということで減点-1)
いや､それこそがこの作品のテーマだと思います｡
短絡的な大罪を持って反語とし､人命を害する犯罪そのものを強く批判しています｡
願わくばこの作品を観た方が｢嫌な｣気分となることを･･･｡

現在まで『２』が製作され、大ヒットを記録している伝説の映画。本作は未公開シーンを加えた『１』の『特別篇』である。追加されたシーンはそれ程多くないのでこちらのバージョンを最初から公開していれば良かったのではないかと思う。何故なら『オリジナル版』よりもメッセージ性が濃くなっているからだ。と言っても二つのＤＶＤではそれぞれ映像特典は重複していないので特典目当てな人と両バージョンを見比べるのが好きな人はオススメである。最近ではこの作品を模倣しようとして逮捕された中学生などがいるが、映画の見方を少し間違っているんではないだろうか？　確かに残虐シーンもあり、人によっては辛いかもしれないが、ただの殺人映画ではないと思う。もし無意味な殺人映画を作ろうとスタッフ達が本気で思っていたなら、今頃こんな映画は作られていないと思う。この映画に悪影響を及ぼしているならゾンビ映画やホラー映画なども例外ではないはず。もちろんこんな出来事は現実にあって欲しくないが、ただの殺人映画ではない。ただの殺人映画なら公開すら出来なかったはずだ。

本編を見ていない人でも、ゲーム前の日常や一人一人の背景にふれられていて分わかりやすくなっていると思います。本編を見た人だと、前後の対比が切なさをそそられます。特典映像も満載です（メイキングとか）。本部のCG（だれがどこにいるか、など）も一部見られるのですが、話の流れとあわせてみるとぐっときます。
