打ち込みとか、クラブサウンドにあこがれる人たちに、入門編として必要な美しさです。うなる低音とか、コンピュータによるハイ・ハット、そういうもののすばらしさがわかる一枚です。これを聞くと、｢トリップホップとか、ブリストルとかってよく分からない｣という想いは吹き飛ぶはずです。

全体の印象はやはり一言で言えば、「暗い」です。
しかし前作「Protection」で見せたような
ひたすら、メランコリックに繊細に作り上げられているのとは違い、
むしろ暗いが、何かが息づいているような温かさや、
1st.「Blue Lines」のような荒々しさも見受けられ、
間違いなくMassive Attackの代表作といえるでしょう。

格段に力強いベースライン、儚くむなしいストリングス、そして
荒々しいディストーションギター。
様々な「音」がこのアルバムでは見事に生かされている。

そして、やはりこのアルバムから3Dの味が濃くなった気がする。
かつての同士で、プロデュースも今まで共に手掛けてきた、
ネリー･フーパーも今回は不参加。

本当の意味でのMassiveサウンドがこのアルバムで完成された気がする。

98年にリリースされた３作目。初回盤には歌詞・対訳は付いてなかったが、現在も同じかもしれない。３人の音楽性ややりたいことがとにかく詰め込まれたような1ｓｔから徐々に音楽性はダウナーになっていき、この３作目では恐らく３Ｄ色が一番強くなった作品だと思われる。

コクトー・ツインズのエリザベス・フレイザーの艶やかなボーカルでヒットした「Teardrop」により、マッシブ・アタックの音楽的路線は良くも悪くも確立されたといっていい。
最新作『100th Window』を聴いて改めてこの『Mezzanine』を聴き直してみると、やはり最初の地を這うようなオープニングから素晴らしい構成のアルバムであったし、楽曲の美しさも飛び抜けて素晴らしいとおもう。
