　グラミー賞をいくつも取ったとか、全世界で１６００万枚売ったとかという事実以外、私はノラ・ジョーンズのことを実はあまり知らないのですが、この人の歌は実に不思議な魅力に満ち溢れています。最近にはないタイプのシンガーですね。
　まず、彼女のハスキーな声がすごく特徴的なわけですが、歌唱力、表現力とも相当な実力の持ち主だと思われます。全編スローからミディアムテンポのナンバーの中、とりわけ、平井堅もカバーしている１の他、２，３，８，１１，１５などが名曲です。
　曲調、シンプルなサウンドから言って、表紙の紹介「大都会のナチュラルヴォイス」というより、むしろ、なんとなくカントリーっぽくて、たとえば、部屋に暖炉があって、横には人の良さそうなおじいさんが座っていて･･･といった、何だか古きよきアメリカのムードを醸し出しているように思います（実にいい加減な想像ですが）。そして不思議と飽きのこないアルバムでもありますね。
　一人で物思いに耽る秋の長い夜など、いい音楽の相手になりそうな１枚です。

最初に聞いた瞬間に体に震えがきた。
久しぶりに聞いてて疲れない気持ちよくのびる声。
特に最初の曲を聞いたときは、
目の前に情景が浮かんでくるくらいの情感を含んだ声だった。
ジャズとしては、たぶん物足りない人もいると思うけれど、
疲れているときに聞くと、別の世界に瞬時に引き込まれてく。
なつかしい映画の世界というか、

昔想像してた大人の世界というか。
雨の夜に一人で聞きたい感じの曲。
迷っているなら絶対買うべき。

オーガニックな歌と演奏にくつろげるアルバム。
ヒットねらいのあざとい曲もなく、アルバム全体が
１枚の静謐な風景画のような味わい。

このアルバムを聴く度に思うことは、ソウルやゴスペル、
カントリーやジャズといったポップミュージックの「幹」を
育んだアメリカという土地の音楽的な肥沃さだ。
ルーツミュージックに裏打ちされた確かな演奏や歌に、
そうしたアメリカの土壌が見え隠れする気がする。

ミュージシャンの腕の確かさや楽曲のクオリティに加えて、
ノラの歌声は穏やかで力みがなく、時に追われる現代人を
ホッとさせるような包容力を感じさせる。

世の中にはこうした音楽がもっとあって然るべきだろう。
そして、本盤が世界的なヒットを記録したことに、
ポップミュージックに一縷の望みを感じずにはいられない。
本来、音楽は音楽として鳴り響くべきもので、
何かの販促ツールでも金儲けの道具でもない。
真っ正直に美しいノラの歌を聴くにつけ、ふとそんなことを
考えてしまった。

聴くほどに味わい深い本盤を、音楽から離れがちの大人たちに
おすすめしたい。
