　2000年6月4日ＮＹ、この日夕方6時より Bell Atlantic Jazz Festival を Butler Library 前オープン・スペースにホストした Columbia 大学は、さすがのラインアップでジャズへの敬意を表明。先頭に立ったのは Matthew Shipp(p) を従えた David S. Ware(ts) カルテットで、アルバム「Surrendered」よりブロウにつぐブロウの入魂の1時間全4曲。続いて Joey Baron(ds) と Ron Carter(b) による、殆どドラムン・ベース状態デュオ。最後に登場したのは、何と Max Roach(ds) と Cecil Taylor(p) による、1時間以上一曲のみの超絶デュオ！

　これをキャンパス芝生上でのフリー・コンサートにする Columbia 大学もすごいが、こんなプログラムで1.5~２万人の聴衆を見込むというＮＹというのはさらに凄い。Max & Cecil の演奏が始まったのは夜9時前。高級住宅街アッパー・ウェスト周辺に響き渡る、大スピーカーから放たれる Cecil の爆音ピアノ。演奏後ステージ前に集まった聴衆と一緒に、Cecil のピアノを愛している人々がこんなにいるのというのを実感したライブ。

　1973年5月来日公演の際に Trio レーベルに吹き込まれたこのソロ作品は、私が初めて Cecil を聴いたアルバム。遅れて生まれてきた私は、この27年後ようやく Cecil の演奏をライブで聴く機会に恵まれる。発売当時「Ｓ.Ｊ.ジャズ・ディスク大賞」を受賞したという Cecil Taylor 傑作の１枚。
