5.0 out of 5 stars メタル系屈指の美声シンガー：ジョン・ロートン参上！, 2004/6/7
ジョン・ロートンは、イギリス人であるが、そのキャリアをドイツのハード・ロック・バンド：ルシファーズ・フレンドのシンガーとしてスタートしている。LUCIFER'S FRIENDは、ジャズ／プログレッシヴの要素も持った実験的なハード・ロック・バンドで、知名度は高くないが、英米以外ではまだ珍しかった本格派のバンドで、その筋のファンにはよく知られていた。特にヴォーカルのJohn Lawtonの目の覚めるような美しい高音は、ロック30年の歴史を経ても色褪せることのない素晴らしいものであった。LUCIFER'S FRIENDの代表曲は「Ride The Sky」という曲で、若干ツェッペリンの「移民の歌」を思わせるコーラスでスタートするスピード・ナンバーである。

しばらくドイツで活動を続けるが、後にその実力を買われ、デイヴィッド・バイロンが去った英バンド：URIAH HEEPに２代目シンガーとして迎えられる。しかしバンドがやや下降線だったこともあり、アルバム３枚を残し脱退。一時ドイツに舞い戻って1981年のLUCIFER'S FRIEND 再結成にも加わっている。

この後、ロートンは再びドイツに舞い戻り、２つのバンドでシンガーを務めた。１つが REBEL（リベル）、もう１つが ZAR（ツァー）である。この２枚のアルバムを１枚にまとめたのが本CDで、格好いいハード・ロック・ナンバーが満載だ。特に、ZAR のファースト・アルバム「LIVE YOUR LIFE FOREVER」の完成度は素晴らしく、良い曲が多い。ロートンの天高くどこまでも伸びて行く高音には心が洗われるようだ。メタル系寄りのバンドのレヴューじゃないみたいだが、ロートンの美声には確かにそんな響きがあるのだ。美しいが、決して弱々しい声ではなく、完全透明だが適度にパワーも兼ね備えている。ちょっと滅多に居ない声で、聞いて損はないと思う。

その美声に惚れ込んで、元DEEP PURPLE/RAINBOW のリッチー・ブラックモアが真剣に自分のバンドに誘ったほどだ。普通人であるロートンが、リッチーの奇行を嫌ったようだが、もしかしたらRAINBOWの歴代シンガーの中に名を連ねていたかも知れない人なのだ。ハード・ロック/ヘヴィ・メタル・ファンならば是非聴いてもらいたい一枚である。

Lucifer's FriendからUriah Heep、ソロ一枚を経てふたたびLucifer's Friendへ。
john lawtonの美声に惚れ込み彼の作品を追ったが、いかんせんマイナーな存在。
そのカタログは入手しづらいことこの上なかったりする。
だからユニオンでこのアルバムを見つけたときには軽い悲鳴をあげてしまったw
マサ伊藤がRebelを傑作だと書いていたが、CD化はないと思っていたから。

実際聴いてみると、Rebelは悪くはないが傑作というほどではない印象。
逆に期待してなかったZarの方が大当たり、これはファンには外せない作品。

解散からLucifer's Friend II として復帰するまでの彼の活動がこの一枚に。
『Heartbeat』にはボートラもついてるし、ロートンありがとう!!!
