ヴァンデンバーグは,オランダのハード・ロック・グループで,グループ名は,リーダーでギタリストのエイドリアンのファミリー・ネームから付けられている。82年のデビュー作から聞きはしめると,そのタイトルの割りには,こけおどし気味なところはない。ヴァン・ヘイレンのデビューの頃を思いださせるような,溌刺としたハード・ロックだ。デビュー早々,ハード・ロック界が騒いだのもよくわかる。ただし,2作目(83年),3作目(85年)と聞き進むにつれて,脳天気なところがなく,それが,小粒な印象も。

　ほとんど何の前触れもなく、大規模なプロモーションもなく、ひっそりと登場したオランダの新人バンドのデビュー作。その内容の素晴しさに高評価を下したのは日本だけではなく、アメリカのチャートでも健闘しました。
　なにしろ曲が良い。後にＷＨＩＴＥＳＮＡＫＥに加入することになるＧのｴｲﾄﾞﾘｱﾝ･ｳﾞｧﾝﾃﾞﾝﾊﾞｰｸﾞの作曲センスの片鱗を存分に見せつけています。
　曲調は、出身のヨーロッパを感じさせない、メジャーなアメリカン･ロック。２作目、３作目と、さらにその傾向が強まります。
　ギター・プレイはオーソドックスではあるもののツボを心得ており、決して出すぎず、曲の一部として収まっています。確かなテクニックと非凡なセンスを見せびらかしていないところに好感が持てます。
　２、３作目も素晴しい内容ですが、「売ろう」とする意図が露骨でない分この１枚目が清々しく、お薦めです。
　なお、ｴｲﾄﾞﾘｱﾝは画才もあり、１，２，３枚目のジャケットは、彼の手によるもの。天は二物を与えた。

このアルバムの価値は、リリースされた時代背景にもあります。
ヴァン・ヘイレンの衝撃的なデビュー後、
次なるギターヒーローの座を突如として失わなければならなかったランディー・ローズの急死。
そんな時代にオランダからデビューした“Vandenberg”。
エイドリアンのギター奏法はランディー同様
クラシックスタイルを基本とした確実かつ斬新なコード進行。
他のメンバーも基本能力が高く、エイドリアンの美しい曲に各種の彩りを添えています。
一曲一曲〜アルバム全体に起承転結を感じることのできる、日本人好みのデビュー作です。

１９８２年のデビューアルバム。キャッチー＆ポップでなおかつイージーアクセスであることを重視したアルバム。一緒に口ずさめるのがこのアルバムのポイント。万人受けする「ポップメタル」のひとつのサンプル。今聞くとやはりヴォーカルのレンジの狭さがやはり気になる。精一杯ポップになりきってやっているのだが、３）４）を除き楽曲がいまひとつさえない。田舎の商店がロックを世界中でブレークするのを夢見てがんばっているたたずまい。ギタープレーの確かさと感情表現力はかなりのもの。デビッドカヴァーデイルが歌うとぴたりとはまるナンバーが多いのがこのバンドの特色でもある。発展途上を記録したバンドのジャンプスタートでもある。(6)
