当時手塚治虫は虫プロ倒産の後は漫画に専念していた。しかしアニメの夢は忘れることできず、ついにこのアニメで復権を果たす。
演出・原案・構成: 手塚治虫 チーフディレクター・キャラクターデザイン・美術構成: 坂口尚

手塚は当時莫大の量の連載を抱えており、このアニメが完成したのは実は放映当日であったというのは有名な話だ。しかし、手塚は決して手を抜かなかった。その情熱がこのあとの３本の２４時間テレビアニメとなって結実する。それが虫プロの再結成の礎となり、今に続くのである。坂口尚が一作目から関っていたのも注目。この人も実は天才肌のアニメーター、漫画家であった。

手塚治虫アニメに登場するキャラクターもあちこちで出演しています。
特に、ブラックジャックはこの作品の中でも重要な人物となってでています。
ブラックジャックが何故高額医療費を請求するのか、という謎もここで解明されてます。
