ズビン・メータ指揮ロス・アンジェルス・フィルのドヴォルザーク。1975年デッカ社への録音である。この時代のメータは実に颯爽としていて、自信満々に楽しげに名曲を次々と録音していた。このディスクは、まず有名な交響曲第9番「新世界」を収録しているが、第一楽章の序奏から前向きで健やかで気持ちいい。主部に入るとテンポは速めで、掲示部の繰り返しもないが、淡々という感じではなく、強い印象を残して曲が進んでいく。第二楽章の「家路」のメロディもセンチメンタルにならない程度に歌っている。第三楽章はエネルギッシュ。第四楽章も英雄的で金管のたっぷりした響きなど、いい味付けである。……交響曲第8番は、「新世界」に比べると薄味な解釈ではあるが、ここでのロス・アンジェルス・フィルはあたかもウィーン・フィルのように上品な音を出しているのに驚かされる。第二楽章のゆったり呼吸するような曲調から大きな盛り上がりに続いていく部分の色彩も美しい。スラブ調の第三楽章も良い。第四楽章が少しおとなしめに感じられるが、それでも決めの部分のティンパニなど、なかなかサービス旺盛に入っている。懐かしい70年代の優秀な指揮者とオーケストラのドヴォルザークだ。
