   パティ・スミスのようなシンガー／ソングライターが、『Land（1975-2002）』のようなまったくのアンソロジー・アルバムを出すなんて、なんだかそぐわないようにも思える。何しろこれまでヒットしたシングルといえば、「Because the Night」だけなのだ。それでもなお、ニューヨークの初期パンクシーンへ、元祖フェミニスト詩人として彼女が与えた影響力は、今も彼女をアメリカン・カウンターカルチャーのアイコン的な存在にしている。そういう意味で『Land』は、40年に渡る揺るぎないキャリアの枠組みをとらえる役割を果たしている。

   2枚組に全31曲、ほぼ2時間半の音楽を収録した『Land』は、スタジオ録音アルバムからの曲で始まり、特に1978年『Easter』に重きをおいている。「Dancing Barefoot」「People Have the Power」 「Gloria」「Rock 'n' Roll Nigger」「Frederick」そしてもちろん「Because the Night」など、名曲はすべて網羅している。このCD用に特別カットされた2曲のうちのひとつとして、プリンスの「When Doves Cry」の新録音ヴァージョンも収録されている。

   ディスク2は、ギグやインターネットからセレクトされた曲が目当てのファンが喜ぶ内容だ。まず最初は1974年の「Piss Factory」を含む初期のデモ、そして『Horses』以前に録音された2曲「Redondo Beach」「Distance Fingers」。続いて「Dead City」」「Spell」「Boy Cried Wolf」など2001年の全米・ヨーロッパツアーでとられたものを中心とした未発表ライヴ録音、それからスタジオのアウトテークという内容だ。スミスは自らリマスターを手伝い、ブックレット用にファンの写真などを用意したという。

   パティ・スミスの人気が『Land』で再燃するとは思えない。しかし、ひとつひとつの曲に満ち満ちた惜しみない汗、飢え、インテグリティは、決して金儲けに走らなかったひとりのアーティストの驚くべき姿をファンたちに伝える。（Kim Hughes, Amazon.co.uk）

　いままでパティスミスに関しては「まぁまぁ好き」という程度だった、だからベストを買えばそれでいいかなという軽い気持ちだったが、彼女の魅力にノックアウトされてしまった。

　なんたって彼女はカッコよすぎる、彼女こそがロック、それがたった2枚のCDで、しかも音だけでそれが伝わってくるんだからいかに凄いかがわかってくれると思います、ロックファンを自称する人にとっては絶対買い！！
　私にいたっては過去の彼女のアルバム全部集めないと気が済まなくなりました。

パティスミスのアンソロジー２枚組が発表されると分かった時から私個人の注目はシングルの「Hey Joe」「Piss Factory」（これは収録）やシングルＢ面のレア曲でリマスターのボーナスから外れた「Time Is On My Side」やその他のライヴヴァージョンが収録されるかどうかだったので初期に思い入れの強い私にはちょっと期待はずれの部分もありました。近年、完全復活というか初期に勝るとも劣らぬ活躍なのでこういった選曲は妥当でしょう。ブランクがあったにも関わらず彼女のヴォーカルは以前と変わらず少し危なげでパワフルで聴き応えがあります。１枚目のベストはちょっと「イースター」びいきではありますが文句はありません。十分納得できる選曲です。アートワークを含めて今まで全く駄作が無いパティ。恵まれてるなぁ。
