　ソウルフルでハスキーでパワフルで時に可憐な変幻自在のヴォーカルを操るリンダ・ホイル嬢（vo）を含むジャズ・ロック・バンド、唯一の作品。他のメンバーはリントン・ネイフ（org）、マイク・ジョップ（g）、モ・フォスター（b）、グラント・サーペル（ds）の男性４人。リンダのヴォーカルと同じくらい、いやそれ以上に要となっているのがハモンド・オルガン。文字通り弾き倒すそのプレイは、聴いているこっちまで気が引き締まる思い。10分を超えるボブ・ディランのカヴァー“見張り塔からずっと”は各人の名人技も堪能できる即興演奏の洪水であり、オルガン・リフがとくに印象に残る。1のブラス・アレンジと3のストリングス・アレンジをレッド・ツェッペリンのジョン・ポール・ジョーンズが担当。この後、リンダはソロを発表、グラントはセイラーへ加入（２作目から）、モはディープ・パープルをクビになったロジャー・グローヴァーのソロなどに参加する。

本作のジャケットは、ヒプノシス（ツェッペリン、フロイド等）、ロジャーディーン（イエス、エイジア等）と並んでロックのアルバムジャケット史にその名を残すキーフが手がけました。キーフといえばアフィニティの名が挙げられる程に本作の幻想的なジャケットは印象的です（ただLPとCDのリリース時期により写りが著しく異なる）。非常に英国/ヨーロッパ的で、現在では出せない魅力に満ちています。

ジャケットのそんな魅力は本作のサウンドにも表れています。ヒプノシスのジャケットで有名なトゥリーズの2枚目の作品同様、（ブルース）ロックとジャズ、トラッド、フォークを消化したそのサウンドはどこをとっても「あの時代のイギリス」にしか出せないものばかりです（特にハモンドオルガン）。ヴォーカル、リンダホイルの声は「ソウルフル」の1語に尽きます。アフィニティは結局本作だけしか作品を残しませんでしたが、その事が勿体無いと思わせる上手い演奏は1度は聴いてみる価値があります。

本作で注意を引くのが、1と3のブラスとストリングのアレンジをJ.P.ジョーンズが手がけている事、ジャズロック風にアレンジされたディランの7（ハモンドオルガン弾きまくりの熱演）、ビートルズの12、キャロルキングの14でしょう。8から15は未発表曲でどれも非常に質の高い内容です。

惜しまれるのは裏ジャケットの白鳥のいる写真（表ジャケの左半分につながる光景）が文字で邪魔されている事です。ブックレットの裏にそれを使用してくれても良かったのにバンドメンバーの写真が使われてます（ただこれはこれで貴重な写真）。それを相殺するかのように、CDのレーベル面は何とピクチャーレーベルになってます（もちろん表ジャケの写真）。ブックレットではバンドの歴史や当時のアルバム評などの資料が充実してます。ジャケットにだまされたと思って買っても決して損はしない本作は多くのロック/トラッド/ジャズファンにお勧めです。

裏名盤的扱いで長年持てはやされていた評判で買ったが
聞いてみて何か物足りないというのが正直な感想です。
基本的にポップで聞きやすいジャズロック調なのですが
ただ若干ツメが甘い気も。
ハイライトと評判の10分を超える「見張り塔からずっと」も
冗長に聞こえてしまう。

しかしそれも自分がこのアルバムに対して期待しすぎたせいかもしれません。
「ナイト・フライト」は文句なしに圧倒されますし
ボーナストラックも充実しています（「リトル・ロンリー・マン」が特に好きです）。
リンダ・ホイルの声もハモンドの音もバンドのグルーブも好きです。
もう少しアレンジをつめて欲しかったか･･･
