   ジャコ・パストリアスは70年代半ばから80年代初頭にかけて、ウエザー・リポートで活動した。ウエザー・リポートがもっとも輝いていたのはジャコがいた時代だった。それに異議を唱える人は、まずいないだろう。それほどジャコの存在感は絶大だった。
   これは同グループ在籍中の80年に録音したソロ・アルバム。自身のバンド、ワード・オブ・マウスによるものだが、その録音方法が実にユニーク。最初にジャコがすべてのベーシック・トラックを作り、ほかのメンバーがそこに演奏を重ねていくというスタイルで録音された。そのためここでのジャコは作編曲面を含め、音楽監督として持てる力を総動員している。トゥーツ・シールマンスのハーモニカをフィーチャーした<2>は美しい演奏だし、バッハの無伴奏チェロ組曲をモチーフにした<4>、ビートルズ・ナンバーの<5>もあるといった具合で、ここに聴かれるサウンドはジャンルを超越したジャコ独自の世界。もちろん超絶的なベース・ソロも聴ける。ジャコが音楽家としての全体像を強烈にアピールした記念碑的な作品だ。（市川正二）

In 1981, while still with Weather Report, Jaco Pastorius amassed this unremitting, topnotch big band into which he threads anything that appealed to his vast jazz imagination--from the bell-clanging Caribbean to the burning soul of R&B to the jaunty European boulevards. On board are Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Peter Erskine, Jack DeJohnette, Michael Brecker, Don Alias, and others. The result is skirmishing, scurrying, all-in slabs of sound that suddenly give way to fluid quietude with chorus and strings and, most wonderfully weirdly, to harmonica features from Toots Thielemans. Pastorius is always close to the front, a fretless-bass phenom who out-guitared most guitarists. 黙示的な雰囲気をもつ曲調の1を挨拶代わりに、ウェザーリポートにて既発の2は、見事なブラス･オーケストレーションとトゥーツ･シールマンスの演奏に彩られて楽曲本来の美しさに更に磨きがかけられている。

そして3のポップさ、ブラスの音の濃厚さ。キャッチーなベースラインに無意識に体が動いてしまう。

当然ながら今作品ではジャコの卓越したベースプレイを堪能できるのだが、中でも圧巻なのはタイトル曲の6。ジミヘンばりにドライヴをかけたエレクトリックベースをバリバリと弾きまくっています。

ジャコの高度な音楽性や演奏技術に驚いているうちにアルバムが終ってしまう、といった感じの非常に中身の濃い、驚きと感動の詰まった秀作です。

ニューヨーク、マンハッタンを背中にFenderのフレットレス・ベースを逆さに背負って闊歩する長身のチョンマゲうった男がいる。その男こそジャコ・パストリアスだ。ジャコは1987年9月21日(Mon)、午後9時25分、喧嘩による負傷が原因でフロリダで死去。享年35歳。

ウエザー・リポートのベーシストとして、世界で最も低い音を出しながら『ヘビー・ウエザー』あたりから参加。ジョー・ザビィヌル、ウエイン・ショーターといったビッグ・ネイムと互して、凌駕してしまったその天性の力は1981年『Word of Mouth』という傑作で一つの頂点を迎える。

　フロリダのフォート・ローダーディルにあったジャコの自宅に、24チャンネルのライブ・レコーディング用トラックを駐車させ、その傑作は出来上がった。最初の曲『クライシス』は最初にベースとリズム・トラックだけを録音し、次にソロイストを一人ずつにベース以外何も聴かせずにオーバー・ダビングして作られている。ジャコ以外誰一人、どんな作品になっているのか知らされていなかったという。 　最高作『リバティ・シティ』では彼が実は何がやりたかったかが如実にでている。『ああ、ジャコ、君はこういう風にやりたかった訳か。』と言ってやりたいくらいすばらしくオリジナリティあふれている。トゥーツ・シールマンのハーモニカ、スティール・ドラムの音、ハービー・ハンコックのピアノ、そしてジャコのベース。すべてが渾然一体となって、ひとつの生命体になりマイアミの空へと歩を進めているような気がする。至高だ。
　ジャコがこの一つの頂点を迎えていたとき、日本の『Aurex Jazz Festibal』にやってきた。1982年9月5日、横浜スタジアムに僕は彼のビッグ・バンドのライブを聴きに行くことができた。のちにライブ盤『TWINS』という名前でI とIIに分けられて発売されている。

　トゥーツ・シールマンやランディ・ブレッカーといった業師の中、ジャコのベースは冴えまくっていた。やはり、『ソウル・イントロ/ザ・チキン』、『コンティニウム』、『リバティ・シティ』と続いた演奏は筆舌に尽くしがたい物だった。歴史の一部を見ている.......そういった感じだった。

　そんな彼も最期は、愛用のベースを売り、マンハッタンの路上で自分のレコードを売り歩くようになった。

　強烈に光輝き、燃え尽き、路上の喧嘩が原因で、35歳で死ぬ。そういう人生もあるのだろう。確かに人生はなんでもありかもしれない。でもジャコ、僕は君が何を言いたかった解ってるつもりだよ。既に彼の死んだ年を越え、これからも生きて行くだろう自分を、時に遠くから眺めながら『Word of Mouth(口伝)』....彼が口から口に何を伝えたかったのか、を考えながらこのアルバムを聴いている。

３５年の短い人生を生き急いだ天才ジャコが残した２枚目にして最後のソロ・アルバム（ライヴ・アルバム等は除く）。１枚目も凄い作品だったが、本作も様々なアイデアに溢れ、しかも全体を通じてトータル・アルバム性をより増し、奔放さと完成度を両方備えた稀有の作品。間違いなく、８０年代ジャズを語るのに欠かせない１枚である。星５個では足りないぐらいだ。１曲目の驚速ベースのフリー・ジャズ風のサウンドで驚かされ、２、３曲目は一転してビッグ・バンド・ジャズ。トゥーツ・シールマンスのハーモニカの音が心地よく響きわたるご機嫌なナンバーが続く。そして、ジャコ以外は到達不可能であったであろう高みに至る後半へ。バッハの半音階的幻想曲で開幕し、切れ目なしにビートルズのブラック・バードへとなだれ込む。時間を超えて名曲に新たな命を吹き込む発想の自由自在さにはおそれいるばかりである。ジャコのベースにのってトゥーツ・シールマンスのハーモニカがブラック・バードのメロディを奏でる部分は本当に美しい。次のワード・マウスは再びジャコの壮絶な演奏に息をのむばかり。そしてジョンとメリーは一転して南の楽園を思わせる素晴らしい曲。この一大ドラマの作品がこのような温かみのある曲で幕を閉じるのは何とも聴く者を幸せな気分にしてくれる。ここではウェイン・ショーターのソプラノ・サックスとオセロ・モリノウのスティール・ドラムが冴えわたる。

本作は上記ミュージシャン以外にもハービー・ハンコック、マイケル・ブレッカー、ジャック・ディジョネット、ピーター・アースキン等が参加している。これら豪華なミュージシャンをまとめて作られたまさにジャズ史に残る不滅の作品。リマスターされたクリアな音で存分に堪能して下さい。
