2002年の日本公演も最高だったブライアン。これは2000年、アメリカでのライヴの模様を収めた2枚組だ。ワンダー・ミンツやジェフリー・フォスケットの力を借りながら、往年の名曲から最新曲までを嬉しそうに披露。兄弟に先立たれ、ひとりぼっちの彼が歌う姿は感動的だ。

奇跡の復活とも騒がれた99年の来日公演におっかなびっくり足を運んだ時のことを、ここでは感動も新たに思い出す。2000年4月のLAロキシー・シアター公演を収めたブライアン・ウィルソンのライヴ2枚組は、ボーナス・トラックも日本がいちばん多い曲数(「ファン・ファン・ファン」を追加の計5曲)でのパッケージ化となったもの。そして、最後に収めたインタビューでも語られる、ジェフリー・フォスケット+ワンダーミンツの素晴らしいバッキングや、小さな会場ならではの観客とのホットな一体感も、特に“『ペット・サウンズ』期”へと向かうDisc 2(弟のカール・ウィルソンを偲ぶ「レイ・ダウン・バーデン」と自作を除いての最愛曲「ビー・マイ・ベイビー」の連なりもいい)により強く実感されるのが、本人すこぶるゴキゲンのここでのものだ。そう、これと今号が出る頃には、2001年のテロの余波で延期されていた待望の再来日公演(2月21日~)も始まる。 (会田裕之) --- 2002年03月号
