ブラジルのヘヴィ・メタル・バンド、VIPERを石もて追われたアンドレ・マトス(Vo)が新たに結成したバンド、ANGRA。
本作は'93年にリリースされた彼らの1stアルバムだ。

VIPERを離れてからは本格的にクラシック音楽の勉強をしていたというマトスの音楽的素養が
フルに活かされたメロディック・メタル・アルバム。
とにかくオープニングを飾るスピード・チューン"Carry on"のインパクトはすごかった。
HELLWEENの名曲"Eagle fly free"から影響を受けた曲構成に、クラシカルでシンフォニックなアレンジを巧みに流し込んだこの名曲は、
一発で日本やヨーロッパ、南米のヘヴィ・メタル・ファンを虜にした。

マトスの線の細い声質は好き嫌いが分かれるだろうが、バックの演奏は非常に安定している。

中でもギタリストのキコ・ルーレイロは流麗なセンスの良いフレーズを次々と繰り出す逸材。

このアルバムをはじめて聞いたのは10年位前か・・・
当時高校生で、余りへヴィーな音楽は好まずポップスやロックを聞いていた頃だったので、初めてこのアルバムを聞いて鳥肌が立ったのを覚えている。
こういう音楽を聞きなれている人には大して珍しくはないんだろうけども、当時はじめて聞いた新しい音楽のジャンルと曲にただただ驚いた記憶がある。
特にイーヴル・ウォーニングは曲の始めのコーラスからして、コーラスも曲調も美しくクラシックを聞いている時のような気持ちになった。
クラシックのように美しい曲なのに、速くてカッコイイ！！
壮大に広がる曲の中の物語に、歌詞なんてわからないのにすっかり引き込まれてしまいそれからというものの、すっかりHR/HMしかきかなくなってしまいました。
特にイングヴェイやストラトヴァリウスなどのクラシカル（？）でメロディアスな音楽に今現在も魅了され続けている。
そのきっかけとなったのが、このアルバム。

そのくせ、星４つなのはこのアルバム・・
アルバムよりも、シングルの方がいい気がする。
そう思うのは私だけだろうか・・・

２曲目の「キャリー・オン」でいきなり昇天しました。「嵐が丘」は原曲よりうまいです。「イーブル・ウォーニング」で再度昇天も間違いありません。信じがたいことですが、これがデビューアルバムなんです。
