どこまでも、ソウルフルで、限りなく、エモーショナル。それがロバート･ワイアットの音楽。聴くたびに、聴き手の感情の最も深いところへ激しく訴えかける歌声、心のこもった誠実な音楽。どこまでも夢中になれる、自分にとって非常に大切な音楽。皆さんにとってもそうであればいいと思う。まだ聴いたことがないという人でも、聴けばきっとそうなるはず。

1980年と1981年にラフ･トレードから発表した４枚のシングルの各曲に、２曲の新曲を追加して、1982年に発表されたＬＰが本作である。元はシングル曲を集めたものなので、作品の表面的な統一性は薄い。ワイアット本人の曲は冒頭の“Born Again Cretin”のみで、その他は全てカヴァー曲である。取り上げた曲には、ラテンあり、ビリー・ホリデイあり、当時のＲ＆Ｂの新鋭シックの曲ありなど、さまざまなスタイルの曲が混在しているが、聴いてみれば、作品全体を貫く軸としてあるのは、まぎれもなくロバート・ワイアットという存在そのものであり、彼ならではの独自の浮遊感ある音空間であることがわかる。そして彼の歌声があれば、他者の曲でも一発で彼の色に染まる。作品全体のムードは静謐で淡々として、派手さも激しさもないが、聴き手の心にグッと突き刺さる威力はまさに絶大である。

ロールズ・ロイスのエンブレムをもじった、工場労働者の絵が描かれたジャケットに象徴されるように、日々の生活を一所懸命に暮らす人々に向けて、さまざまな面で不当な抑圧を受けている人々に向けて、そして抑圧している側に向けて、彼のメッセージは静かに放たれていく。「社会」という曖昧なくくりに向けてではなく、それは聴き手である自分であり、皆さん一人一人であり。そして、彼の曲を通して、聴き手は自分のことを見つめていくことになるだろう。彼の作品を聴いたことがなければ、どれでもいいから手に入るものを聴いてみてほしい。

ソフト・マシーンから、もうかなり長いことこの人の音楽を聴いているけど、はっきり言って、この人の政治思想なんて興味ないし、アテにもしてない。僕が好きなのはこの人の優しいが、確信に満ちた歌と、独特の丸い、全体的にモワーっとしたサウンド（所謂カンタベリー・マジック、ディブ・ステュワート等の作品にも感じる）だけだ。カバー曲もとても良い。まったく、この人が歌うと何でも懐かしく感傷的に聴こえるし、誰と組んでも不思議な感じがしない。すごい雰囲気力（親和力）のある人だな、と今更ながら思う。
