FREEはどのアルバムにも固有の魅力があるので、ファンの方は自分の好きなアルバムに思い入れが強く、人それぞれでベストアルバムが違うようです。
野心と若さにあふれた１作目、実験的な２作目、曲作りに方向性が見えてきた３作目、曲作りに自信と余裕が伺える４作目、スタジオ盤とは一味違った、熱気とバンドの一体感が感じられるライブ盤、曲作りから、サウンドに厚みを持たせることに移行したように感じられる５作目など。
私は、４作目「ハイウェイ」と本作でとても迷ってしまいますが、今は、野心と情熱を通り越した、冷静で荘厳な雰囲気すら感じられる本作に大きな魅力を感じます。
どの曲も、さびの部分がドラマティックで情緒に訴えかけてくるので、酒飲みながら聴くと、とてもいい気持ちになります。

７３年発表の７作目。フリーのラスト・アルバムであり文句無しの歴史的名盤だと思う。人間関係のもつれや契約などの様々な問題を抱えて離散集合をくり返していたフリーのメンバーは、最後の可能性に掛けてこのアルバムに全精力を傾けたであろう事は、数々の素晴しい名曲を聴けば一目瞭然だろう。アンディ・フレイザーは関わらず、ポール・コゾフも病気のため５曲のみの参加だが、素晴しいソロを聞かせている。しかし影は薄く、かつての作品と比べると少しだけ浮いた感じを受ける。もちろんそれはこの作品のポイントを下げるようなほどではない。むしろ一歩引いたことが、良いバランスを作ったとも捕えられると思う。曲作りもポール・ロジャースの単独、新加入のラビットの単独作品、メンバー全員名義のものと、概ね個人プレーが目立ち、かつてのフリーとは趣が異なるが、これが思いっきり吉と出ている。特にポールの単独の１．は名曲中の名曲ということよりも、フリー、もしくはポールの新しい音楽の展開手法として計り知れないほどの可能性を持った一曲だったと思う。結果としてポールはこの方向性に進まずにバッド・カンパニーというオーソドックスな音楽性を選んだわけだが、それだけにこの一曲の輝きは眩しすぎる。４．もハード・ロックの超名曲だろう。２．は従来の曲に近い印象だが、素晴しすぎて目頭が熱くなる。ラビットの作品である５．も以下同文である。このアルバムと「Fire and Water」を同じ土俵で語る事は非常に難しいことだが、どちらかと言われればこちらが好き。有終の美っていうのは、こんな時に使うんでしょうね。

不安定な健康状態からゲスト扱いに甘んじたコゾフ、自身不在のままバンドが存続する事になったフレイザーの屈辱。文字通りオリジナルメンバー二人の「心を引き裂いた」フリー名義最後のオリジナル作品。フレイザーの我流ファンクネスを失い、四人しか出せない独特の音空間も消失したが、いい作品である事に間違いはない。ラビットの貢献が特に大きく、創作だけでなくその演奏はコゾフのソロを気持ちよく導き出す触媒の役目も果たしている。Ａ．キングのBorn Under A Bad Signにヒントを得たと想われる表題曲ではコゾフ生涯屈指の完璧な「歌う」ソロを披露し、マイクが切り替わるミスも帳消しにさせるCome Together In The Morningでのむせび泣くギターに火が着いた時の彼の凄さを思い知らされる。彼の代役など誰にも務まりはしないのである。しかし、その集中力はアルバムの半分程度しか持たず、全体にはロジャースの創作力とボーカルの他を圧倒する印象が強い。

紆余曲折あった録音事情があって、アナログ時代は音の悪さで有名だったが、再発により良くはないがだいぶマトモになった。ただし、追加トラックはシンプルなアレンジがより曲の主題に合っているMuddy Waterを除いてボーナスにしては寂しい内容。あまり期待しない方がベターだ。
