６８年発表の１ｓｔ。ワイルド・フラワーズの最終メンバーを母体として生まれたグループ。メンバーはパイ・ヘイスティングス(G、vo)、デヴィッド・シンクレア(k)、リチャード・コフラン(dr)、リチャード・シンクレア(b、vo) の４人。同じくワイルド・フラワーズを母体としたソフト・マシーンの１ｓｔ辺りと通じるオルガンを基調にしたサイケ・ポップ路線だが、こちらの方がメロディアスな曲が多い。次作以降もオルガンが中心のサウンドなのだが、まだデイヴはオルガンを歪ましておらず、リバーブやディレイなどを中心とした空間的な処理を生かしているところが特徴と言えるだろう。２．ではオルガンにワウを通していたりもする。３．ではリチャードのヴォーカルが聞かれるが、まだ後の輝きはない。４．はパイの実兄、ジミー・ヘイスティングによるフルートのソロも聞ける。５．は後には見られないブッ飛んだサイケデリックな名曲。ワンコードで突っ走るＡメロに大袈裟なサビが絡む展開が楽しい。８．は変表紙を盛り込んだ９分に及ぶ大作で後に彼らの作風のプロト・タイプとも言える曲。

デラム移籍前のデビュー盤は、予算の低さからか音質がいまいちなのが難点ではありますが、パイ・ヘイスティングのボーカルを中心とした、いかにもキャラバンといった美しい作品がずらっと並ぶ、ファン以外にも聴いて欲しいアルバムです。
演奏も「らしく」割とまとまっており、特に「売り物」オルガンの音色とフレーズは既に完成の域に達しています。
あまり取り直しが許されなかったんだろうと思わせる演奏の甘さや、いいところで唐突にフェイドアウトされてしまういい加減なレコード作りが、無名バンドの悲哀を感じますが、余りある個性がそれをカバーしている無印良品な一枚だと思います。

1968年リリースのデビュー作。後にみせる独特なジャズ・ロックにはまだ熟成しておらずデイ
ヴ・シンクレアのオルガンプレイもまだおとなしい。
全体的には60年代後半のブリティッシュ勢にみられるサイケ感覚が強い。だがCaravanらしい
叙情美が随所にあります。「Place of my Own」と「Magic Man」はパイ・ヘイスティングスの
繊細なヴォーカルと儚い旋律美による極上の曲になってます。

個人的に特に愛聴してる「Cecil Rons」はホラータッチで不気味なインストからはじまるが
やはりサビはCaravanらしい叙情性を有してますね。デイヴのオルガンによる繊細な味付けが
見事。
そしてアルバムのラストを飾る9分の大作「Where but for Caravan Would I?」も特筆もの。
哀愁溢れるコーラスと緊張感みなぎるグルーヴが交錯するスウィングナンバーに仕上がって
おり後の彼らの方向性と成功を感じさせる曲。アルバム全体的に音が良くないなかにあって
この曲だけは何故か非常にサウンドも洗練されていて強い意気込みを感じますね。

『グレイとピンクの地』や『夜ごと太る女のために』などの代表作を聴いた後に彼らのルーツ
をたどる意味で聴けば愉しめると思います。
