   オスカー・ピーターソン、ビル・エヴァンスといった超人気者を別にすると、この日本で局地的に絶大な人気を誇るジャズピアニストといえば、このソニー・クラークである。最も人気のアルバムはジャケットの粋さも手伝って『クール・ストラッティン』。これまた日本人に高い人気を誇るジャッキー・マクリーン（AS）も参加する5人編成のクインテットで、哀愁漂うブルースナンバーなどが特に好まれる。
   また、ピアニストのソロを存分に楽しむならクインテットよりピアノトリオ。『クール・ストラッティン』の前年に録音された本盤は、クラーク絶頂期の演奏。独特な打鍵のタイミングやブルースフィーリングから生まれるねっとりとした質感は、湿度の高い日本の風土にも合い、そのあたりが日本人に特に受けるのではないかと言われている。

ジャズもぐりな僕にとって、正直最初聴いた時には
「Bill EvansやBud Powellに比べると特徴が見えにくくて地味だなぁ」くらいの印象しかありませんでした。
全く、今思えば恥ずかしい限りです。

Sonny Clarkの弾くピアノって、音の１つ１つがリズムやメロディを強く主張する「一聴してわかりやすい」タイプではない代わりに、
丸みのある音が自然に「スウィング」していて、尚且つ「情緒」があるように思えるんですよね。
ジャズの表現に「情緒」なんて言葉を使うのは変な気がしますが、しかしこの言葉が一番しっくりくる気がするんです。
その辺が日本で人気があって、アメリカではマイナーな存在である１つの理由なのかもしれません。

大人気曲5はもちろん素晴らしいですが、
他にも1の熱い演奏や7（こっちのテイクの方が個人的に好みなので）の素晴らしいピアノ・ソロなど、聴き処がたくさんあります。

堅実なリズム・セクションが、またClarkの良さを引き立ててくれています。
聴く回数を増すごとに、良さが増してくるような素晴らしい作品だと思います。

　なんだかんだ言っても「Softly As In A Morning Sunrise」に尽きます。この曲は、名演、名唱を産みだしやすい曲といえますけれど、数あるなかでもこれが（日本人にとっては）最高でしょう。ピアノトリオ好きなら聴いておかないと話しにならない決定的名演奏だと思います。とくに１曲目から順番に聴いていって５曲目で最高潮に達し、６曲目で一息つく、というのが正しい聴き方だと思います。

「朝日のようにさわやかに」はいいです。他の有名プレーヤーも歌い・演奏しておられますが一番ええかも知れません。この曲はピアノ向きのような気がしますね。日本人受けする演奏といわれておりますが、ようわかりませんが日本人の僕にはぴったりのフィーリングです。ジャケットもクール・ストラッティンに負けず劣らずええ出来だと思っていますが。
