エドワード・ヤンの映画を「恋愛時代」「ヤンヤン　夏の思い出」みたいに恥ずかしい邦題で売るのは勘弁して。
どれも台湾、台北の現代を描いた作品なので、原題直訳調でないならば「台湾××」「台北××」というのが良いのでは？

チャン・チェンは苦味のある良い俳優ですね。

舞台は台北ですが、東京で起こったかも知れない少年たちの物語です。
ある者は、自分の弱さを知り、ある者は自分の子供さ加減を知る。
そして在る者もまた、何かを知る。

前半で自分達がしてきたことがどんなことだったのか、ラスト近くある少年は身をもって知ります。それがどんなことだったのか、自分がされなければ分からない稚拙さ、幼稚さ。

それでも、ラストは美しく素晴らしいのです。

　同監督の「枯嶺街少年殺人事件」に出演した少年たちが主要な役を務め、
また、同監督の「恐怖分子」にも通じる筋立てや雰囲気を持ちつつ、
前二作にないユーモアも備えた秀逸な作品です。

「枯嶺街」で主演した張震がここでも鋭敏な表情を見せています。
「枯嶺街」の同級生の少女にひたむきな思いを寄せる思春期の少年と、
この作品の美貌と甘言で女性を操り売春紛いの行為も平然と働く殆ど青年に近い少年とでは
表面上の行動は対照的で全く相容れない人物に思えます。
　しかし、二つの人格を演じた張震の寡黙でとらえどころのない表情は、
二編の少年がどこか相通じる心性の持ち主だと感じさせます。
　そして、女性の残酷さに致命的な打撃を受ける展開に至って、
やや悪魔的なまでにドライな美青年が
実は「枯嶺街」の不器用な少年の転生だったと明示されます。

　こうした演出から、「枯嶺街」の素朴な発展途上の町並みから
本作での世界一の地下鉄「マトラ」を誇る現代都市へと装いを変えても、
二つの物語の舞台が一貫して台北である様に、
そこに生きる人々が抱える心性も根本的には同質だと思わせられます。

　そんな中で、少年四人のリーダー格で、
理論家の知能犯、饒舌な狂言回しでもある「紅魚」（字幕では『レッドフィッシュ』）は、
張震の「香港」以上に悲惨な結末を迎えます。
「策士策に溺れる」自業自得の結果と言えばそれまでですが、
まだ少年の幼さを色濃く残す姿が環境の犠牲と言うべき痛ましさを呼び起こします。

　二人と違って直接には難を逃れたスキンヘッドの「トゥースペイスト」には
懲りずに悪行を繰り返していく未来が示されますが、
これも遠からぬ破滅を観客に必然的に予感させ薄ら寒い気持ちにさせられます。

　しかし、純情な少年倫倫には穏やかで幸福な結末が与えられており、
この点に先行作品にない救済や希望が感じ取れました。

　香港など他の国際都市と台北の影響関係を考察する上でも興味深い一編です。
