イタリアのプログレバンド、Maxophone が残した唯一の作品。1975 年作。スタジオミュージシャンをしていたドラム、ベース、ギターの 3 人に、クラシック畑の 3 人を加えた 6　人編成。当時のイタリアのグループによくある初期のクリムゾンを思わせる技巧的なアンサンブルとハードなサウンドが基本だが、なんといっても多彩な管楽器群が効果的に使用されているのが特徴。フルート、サックスは当然として、クラリネットやフレンチホルンまで登場。特にフレンチホルンの効果は抜群で、目まぐるしく展開する緩急自在な楽曲の「静」の部分に、独特の古風な枯れた幻想味が生まれている。ムーグでも似たような質感の音色を使う場合があるが、やはり生音には及ばない。イタリアらしい情緒的な歌い口にも見事に調和していて、まったく貴重なサウンドだとしかいいようがない。隠れた名盤のひとつ。

　イタリア出身のプログレ･バンドの‘７５年発表の唯一のアルバム。本CDには、別に発表されたシングル曲２曲が追加収録されている。
　６人編成という大所帯の上に３人のゲスト･プレイヤーも参加している。それがこのバンドの大きな特徴であり、フルート、サックス、クラリネット、トロンボーン、ヴィブラフォンといった管楽器と、ハープ、ヴァイオリン、チェロといった弦楽器も大々的にフィーチャーされている。
　音楽性は、クラシカルでシンフォニックなメロディを、ジャズ・ロック的に演奏するPFMに通ずるタイプだが、親しみやすさという点では、よりポップなこちらの方が上にも思える。
　演奏力は高いがテクニックを強調するような場面は無く、楽曲の魅力を引き出すのに徹した、とても聴きやすいもので、それにより、美しいコーラス･ハーモニーも実に気持ち良く聞こえる。
　その辺りは、様々な楽器を効果的に配したアレンジの上手さが、大きくものを言っているのが明らかだ。
　質が高い上に、管弦楽器という強力な個性を備えた、逸品のイタリアン・プログレだ。

Maxophoneの同名のアルバム。75年作品。案内本には必ず紹介されている名盤である。クラシックとロックの融合されたすばらしいシンフォニック・ロック。ヴォーカルはイタリアくささがあるが、演奏はサクソフォーン、クラリネット、フルートなどさまざまな管弦楽器のアンサンブルが聞きどころ。今、9000円と高価で取引されているようだが、確かにすばらしいが、やや高い。きっと再発されると思うので待ってみよう。
