８０年代を代表する女優・シルビア・チャンのたぶん監督第一作なのだが、なかなか手堅い演出である。この時期の香港映画は、香港返還問題のせいでどれも一定の「社会性」を保っており、よくあるシンデレラ・ストーリーの『醒夢季節』も例外ではない。

北京からコン・リーが香港にやってくる。出生地は香港なので永住権が取りやすいはずなのだが手続きは遅々として進まず、仕事も見つからない。不本意ながらも、同地で知り合った香港人の恋人に養われる日々である。恋人やその家族は北京育ちの彼女に差別感情があり、結婚できる見込みも薄い。そんな時、香港人でイギリス育ちの大実業家・ケニー・ビーと彼女は知り合い・・・。

香港返還を見据え、中国相手の商品として、ケニー・ビーが思いつくのがトイレット・ペーパーというのが面白い。
