イギリスは、ミステリ小説の本場だけあって、テレビのミステリ・ドラマも、日本の粗製乱造のそれとは比べ物にならないほど作りが丁寧であり、質の高い作品を供給し続けている。そんな中でも、この「名探偵ポワロ」は、群を抜いた出来の良さを誇る作品だ。もちろん、それには、クリスティーの原作が寄与するところが大きいことはいうまでもないのだが、１枚に２本収録されている短編については、その本家の原作を上回る出来を示しているといってもいいだろう。　　

原作とは、活字とテレビという根本的な媒体の違いがあるため、一概にどちらが良いとはいえないのだが、短編に限っていうと、短編のミステリ小説は、謎解きや犯人探しの面白さを味わうまでもなく、あっけなく終わってしまうことが多く、そのままの内容では、５０分間は持たない。テレビ版では、そうした点を踏まえて、ストーリーに改変を加え、謎解き・犯人探しの要素やドラマ性・サスペンス性を原作よりも高めており、見応え十分な内容に仕上がっているのだ。もちろん、長編の方も、ミス・マープルシリーズのテレビ版に感じるような冗長さもなく、引き締まっており、原作に負けてはいない。　　

ちなみに、歴代一の名ポワロ役であるデビッド・スーシェは、２０００年に行われたインタビューで、「あと２２作品となった原作の全てを撮影したい」と語っているのだが、同年の第７シーズン分までが収録されているこの三つのＢＯＸセットの後も、本国イギリスでは、第９シーズン分まで製作されており、残すところ、長編１６作品となっているようだ。不定期の１シーズン２~４作品の製作ペースであり、未収録と思われる「ヘラクレスの冒険」などの取扱いにも不明な点があるものの、デビッド・スーシェは、１９４６年生まれの５８歳と意外に若い。ぜひとも、前人未到の全作制覇の偉業を達成してもらいたいものだ。
