   太平洋戦争末期に行われた日本軍の米兵捕虜生体解剖実験をモチーフに記された遠藤周作の同名小説を、社会派・熊井啓監督が映画化した問題作。
   人道を無視した残酷な実験に参加する青年医師・戸田（渡辺謙）は良心の呵責（かしゃく）にさいなまれる。一方、彼とは反対の姿勢をとりつつも、自分に人間的感情が欠如しているのではと悩む同胞の勝呂（奥田瑛二）。ふたりの眼をとおしてドラマは進められていく。
   本物の血を使って撮影されたというリアルな実験シーンの数々は、モノクロ映像によって逆に陰鬱とした空気が濃密となり、暗黒の時代ならではの背徳の行為をより鮮烈に具現化している。
   ベルリン映画祭銀熊賞（審査員特別賞）受賞。国内でも、キネマ旬報ベスト・テン第1位などに輝いている。（的田也寸志）

戦争中の米軍捕虜への生体実験、決して肯定できる行為ではない。
しかし、ナチスによるユダヤ人に対する生体実験がその後の医学の進歩にどれほど貢献したかとおもうと、現代に生きている自分としては多少なりとも矛盾を感じる。劇中、生体実験に参加した奥田瑛二扮する勝呂を声高に責める岡田真澄扮する米軍人ハットリ調査官、自ら生体実験に積極的に参加する渡辺謙扮する戸田。この二人にどれほどの差があるのだろう。ハットリ調査官に戸田は、広島に原爆を落とした時、あなた達は良心の呵責を感じたかと問う。この作品は人間の残酷さ、自己の曖昧さを痛烈に描きだしていると思う。決して後味はよくないが、一見の価値はある。あと成田三樹夫ファンの自分としては柴田助教授も要チェック

遠藤周作の小説出版が1958年。
熊井啓監督によるこの作品の発表が1986年。
実は脚本は1969年にはできあがっていたが、
スポンサーが見つからなかったとのこと。
それだけ社会に与える影響が大きい作品ということだ。
監督との対談で、奥田瑛二も最も影響された作品と語っている。

使用された手術器具などが終戦当時の医療現場を
忠実に再現するように配慮されており、
映像も白黒なので、我々にとって非常にリアルに感じられる。

人間とは何かを考えさせられた。
この映画が国際的に高い評価を得たのは、当然と思う。

これが本当にあったことかどうかなんて問題ではなく、こんな状況になったら人はこんなこと考えてしまうんだろうなぁととても怖くなりました。
渡辺さんの目がギラギラして迫力がありました。

鑑賞中、トイレで嘔吐するほど怖い映画・・・。
反戦の気運が高まります。
