インストアルバムでありながら、ここで鳴らされている音は、ジオグラフィックというパステルズが関わるレーベルの典型のような音だと思う。ジャズトリオ的な構成ながら、それはいわゆるジャズトリオ作品とは大きく違っている。たゆたうようなグルーヴ感というのだろうか、それはジャズの即興的要素とは相反しているものだ。基本的に繰り返しの音楽でもある。だが、それが少しも実験的に聴こえず、とても身近に感じるし、ほっと安心してしまうようなそんな音楽なのだ。風景が目に浮かぶような瞬間が多々あり、映画的なサウンドとも言える。
パステルズの傑作「イルミネーション」にもビルが参加しており、パステルズがあのアルバムで突如、アンビエント的な効果を生み出しているのは、このビルの手腕によるところが大きいのだということが分かる。そして、これは最も大切なことだが、ビルの書くフレーズはとてもポップだということだ。この能力があってこそ、この音楽は美しく鳴り響く。

まず、一曲目を聞いて下さい。最初のざらざらした音に、しばらくすると、ビルのみずみずしいピアノの音が絡まってきます。その後しばらくしてから始まる、ビルの即興。それはまるで雨粒が窓をつたうようで、メランコリックでありながら、美しく、なのに何故か、力強い。このＣＤを買ってから何度も聞きましたが、その度に胸が熱くなります。音楽理論については、よく分からないけれど、私が今まで聞いたことのなかった音楽でした。
二曲目以降も、陳腐な表現ですが、心に染みる、作品が続きます。
私には、トランペッターが今一つのように感じられましたが、他の人はどう思われるでしょうか。

２００２年後半のベストアルバムでした。
