   アメリカを揺るがし続けて久しい麻薬犯罪コネクション。そのルートのもとであるメキシコで、組織に翻弄（ほんろう）されながら職務をまっとうしようとする捜査官（ベネチオ・デル・トロ）、アメリカで麻薬ぼく滅に乗り出す国家の責任者（マイケル・ダグラス）と麻薬におぼれるその娘、また夫を救うために麻薬ルートに手を染めざるをえなくなっていく妊娠中の専業主婦（キャサリン＝ゼタ・ジョーンズ）などなど、多彩なドラマを同時並行させながら、麻薬戦争の全貌を追うスティーブン・ソダーバーグ監督の問題作。
   それぞれのドラマで映像の色味をブルー、グリーン、黄土色と分けることによって、登場人物の多いストーリー展開をわかりやすく描かれているのも特色のひとつ。また、妊娠中の専業主婦を演じるキャサリン＝ゼタ・ジョーンズは、撮影当時、本当に私生活での夫マイケル・ダグラスとの間の子どもを妊娠中だった。2000年度のアカデミー賞では監督、脚色、助演男優（ベネチオ・デル・トロ）、編集の4部門を制覇。（的田也寸志）

ストーリ、演出、キャスティング、演技、カメラワーク、どの角度から評価しても完璧な、近年稀に見る傑作だと思います。ソダーバーグ作品は「セックスと嘘と…」「エリン・ブロコビッチ」の２作しか観ていないが、映画をケレン味無く真正面から撮る才能においては右に出るものはいないのではないでしょうか。他のレビュアーの方々も書かれてましたが、複雑になりがちなストーリーを実にわかりやすく、かつ効果的に演出しており、暗くなりがちな内容にも拘わらず最後まで画面にぐいぐいと惹きつけられました。
また、オスカーをはじめ各賞を見事総なめにしたＢ．デル・トロの演技も良かった。Ｍ．ダグラスは言わずもがな、Ｃ．ゼタ＝ジョーンズもアメリカ版極妻（笑）を見事に演じきっていましたね。

この映画に１０年以上も前に製作されたＴＶ版があり、そのリメイクだということを全く知らなかった。しかも、オリジナルはアメリカではなくイギリス製作である点も驚きだった。ＴＶ版はイギリス、ドイツ、パキスタンが舞台らしいが、ソダーバーグは舞台をアメリカ、メキシコに移し、３つのドラマに３つの色を配しストーリーを展開する。特にベニチオ・デル・トロ扮するメキシコの警察のストーリーの配色がイエローという点、何故か舞台のメキシコにマッチしており、オリジナルと舞台を変えることによる効果は十分あがっていると思われる。
メキシコを舞台とするベニチオ・デル・トロのドラマも十分恐ろしい話ではあるが、エリカ・クリステンセン扮する次期麻薬取締局長官の娘の話が最も身近であり麻薬の恐ろしさを痛感させられた。遊び半分で麻薬に手を出し、次第に中毒になる。施設に入るも脱走し麻薬を買う金のためにわが身も売るという犯罪連鎖の恐ろしさが見事に描かれている。この役を演じきったエリカ・クリステンセンには拍手を贈りたい。
ただ、マイケル・ダグラスが娘や家族のことを思い、麻薬取締局長の就任記者会見の場で突然役を辞退するという設定はあまりにも現実的でなく、それまでドキュメンタリータッチのリアルな展開がいきなり作り物の世界に戻ってしまった（家庭中心を選択する彼には拍手を贈るというアメリカ好みの展開だろうが、辞任は公の場でしてほしくなかった）。
ＴＶ版は麻薬に溺れる者、販売に手をそめる者、取り締まるものの他に、生産者側の論理や取締る側への社会的非難等も描かれているらしく、是非観てみたいものだ。

とてもよく出来た作品です。始めは関連なく思われる物語が何箇所かで同時に起こって、それがやがて連なって一まとまりになる快感。とくにメキシコでのストーリーが素晴らしく、セピア調の画面を背景に一見だらしなさげ、でも真摯で男っぷりもいい刑事役のベニチオ・デル・トロが渋い！マイケル・ダグラス夫妻も共演していて、妻のキャサリンは大きなお腹そのまま妊婦役で怪演を見せてくれます。
