このカーネギーホールコンサートを終え、来日したときもまったく同じプログラムで演奏したというゼルキン。練りに練り上げたプログラムであったことが容易に想像できます。曲目はすべてゼルキンの十八番(おはこ)、オーストリアものの音楽。しかも年代順ならべ、全体を通して脈絡を感じさせる有機的な統一感。隙のないプログラムです。そして、この隙のないプログラムを、ゼルキンは異常な集中力と、はっとするようなひらめきを随所に見せながら、真正面から正々堂々と弾ききって、聞き手に深い感銘を与えてくれます。
それにしても、「告別ソナタ」はすばらしい。芯の強い見事なタッチで、堂々と弾ききる姿勢は、実に男性的。いまや陳腐なことばとなりつつある「精神性」を感じさせます。
どの曲も懐の深い演奏で、たとえばベートーヴェンの次に感嘆したシューベルトも実に骨太で、表面的なセンチメンタルに堕さないところは実に潔く、気品すら感じさせます。
骨組みのがっしりした、建造物のような様式美のハイドン。しかし、叙情性がないがしろにされているわけではありません。
同様のことはモーツアルトにも当てはまりますが、ゼルキンには嘘がない、そのことを最も強く感じさせる誠実、実直な演奏です。
ゼルキンの真摯な演奏を聞いていると、こんな風に愚直で、しかも味わい深く、聞き手を深い感動にいざなうピアニストが、外にいただろうかと考えてしまいます。同時代の大家と比べても、ゼルキンの求心的な演奏は際立っていると思います。
７５歳のゼルキン。円熟してはいますが、枯れてはいません。ゼルキンは生涯飽くなき求道者だったのです。

このＣＤについては他のレビューアーのおっしゃるとおり。昔のＣＤだとヘッドフォンで聞くとかすかに「ブー」という録音機材の雑音が入っていましたが、それだけが瑕と言えば瑕くらい。最初のハイドンの変ホ長調ソナタの確信に満ちた出だしから、ベートーヴェン的デーモンを垣間見せる中間部、無骨なのに摩訶不思議なメルヘンを紡ぎ出すフィナーレなどルドルフ・ゼルキンにしか出せない魅力だ。モーツアルトのイ短調も無骨ながらバックハウスと並ぶ名演だし、得意中の得意のベートーヴェン「レ・ザデユー・ソナタ」も骨太で希望と惜別、不在の中でも望みを忘れず、再会の喜悦と喜勇を見事に演出する。最後のシューベルトに至っては、遅いと速いの差がありすぎて分裂症気味のリヒテル、完璧主義でどこか明るすぎるポリーニ、巧妙だがシューベルト指示の反復を断固拒否してどこか軽さを感じさせないでもないブレンデルなどに比べて、無骨だが時として劇的で、時として自愛深い、真っ正直なゼルキンに素直に感動せざるを得ない。ううん、何故なのだろう、これほど魅力的なのは。とにかく２０世紀演奏の至宝の一つなので、是非聴いてみてください。
