１９６０年代後半のセリフ過剰なアングラ舞台演劇（そんな物観た事ないが…）というフォーマットをアニメに持って来ただけで、これだけ斬新な表現になるのかと感じられる映画。舞台というメディアそのものをパロッてしまった感がある。実に効果的で愉快な演出（舞台でやったら面白いかもしれないがアニメとかじゃないと出来ない、といったタイプのものが多い）が、要所に盛り込まれており、「立ち喰いそば」、「犬」、「大洗海水浴場」、そしてセリフの洪水と、オシイ・ワールドのレギュラーも盛り沢山。オシイストでなくとも表現者必見の一作。

これ、結構ハマリますよ。
登場人物たちが現実だと思っている世界が、観る側（視聴者）にとってはまるで舞台劇を見ているように感じさせる演出手法。
どんでんや、奈落、スポットライト、観客のガヤ・野次が何故か当たり前のように使用され、アニメという表現を用いたアングラ劇の様相を呈します。

突如現れた未来から祖父（現時点では高校生）に会いに来たと言い張る美少女麿子は、本当に未来の人間なのか、詐欺師なのか、はたまた何らかの企みを持った存在なのか？物語は麿子を軸として、「家族」というものの本質（の近く）まで突き進みます。

舞台劇風な演出により、そして意図的に人形のように描かれるキャラクター達によって、押井氏の「この現実は本当に現実なんだろうか」という観念がより一層際立ちます。自分が現実だと思っている世界は単なる舞台の上の物語であって、何処かの誰かである「観客」というものの目にさらされているんじゃないか、この物語を眺めている観客である我々視聴者でさえ、実はさらに大きな舞台の上に立つ「登場人物であることを自覚していない（脚本の存在すら知らない）演技者」なのではないか、といういいようのない不安感が想起されます。

物語そのものはコミカルに進み、押井節とでもいうようなギャグが満載ですが、その裏側にはとてつもない恐怖が含まれています。
他作を観て、押井氏の作品に興味を持った方に是非この作品をお勧めしたいと思います。珠玉の佳作です。

押井監督の最高傑作は、やはりこの作品ではないかなと思っています。
押井監督はやっぱり30分テレビ枠という制約の中でこそ、最大限の表現力を発揮できる人ではないかと思う。彼は頭では常に映画を志向している人間だが、身体は芯までテレビアニメ屋だと思う。そしてそれでいいのではないかと思う。この作品、大画面のテレビで見ても面白さはちっとも増しません。１４型カラーテレビで見てこそ面白い、そういう作品。貧乏体質だからこそ光る表現。せまっくるしい地下劇場でひしめきあって見る貧乏劇団のような演出の切れ味。腹を空かせた野良犬こそ押井監督の真骨頂。「世界の押井」は似会わない。東京裏町の押井、あるいは新興住宅地の押井であって欲しい！
