このアルバムは２枚目『Ｔｈｅ　Ｍａｎ！』に続くカートム３枚目のアルバムである。
さて、肝心の内容なのだが、全くの私の好みで大正解。
もっと早く手に入れておけばよかったと思いました。
１曲目から心鷲づかみ。
１『Ａｌｌ　Ｂｅｃａｕｓｅ　Ｙｏｕ』はイントロのドラムとピアノが印象的で、ギターが入りリロイが歌いだし、ストリングが流れてくると、どこかジョニー・ブリストルを思わせる感じがカッコよい。
Ｌａｍｐの染谷君が言っていたけれども、ストリングスの音が素晴らしい。
１００％私の趣味であります！
スイート・ソウル好きの私を唸らせるのは２『Ｉ　Ｂｌｅｓｓ　Ｔｈｅ　Ｄａｙ』と６『Ｃａｎ’ｔ　Ｓｔａｙ　Ａｗｅｙ』決してソウルフルな感じを表に出しているわけでも、ファルセットを使うわけでもないのに、リロイの抑制されたヴォーカルの素晴らしさ、そしてカートム独特の気持のいい演奏。リロイの語りには身も心も溶けてしまうようだ。
素晴らしい。
３『Ｉｔ’ｓ　Ｄｉｆｅｒｅｎｔ』ではリロイの手によるシンセサイザーの幻想的な響きとセクシーな女性のため息に導かれる絶妙のミディアム。ギタリストが素晴らしいと思ったらフィル・アップチャーチだった。やっぱり。
４『Ｃｏｏｌ　Ｏｕｔ』は打って変わってジャジーな曲。
クロスオーバー・イレブンでかかりそうな雰囲気で途中のホーンとスキャットがなんとも言えないインストゥルメンタルを経て、続く５『Ｌｕｃｋｙ　Ｆｅｌｌｏｗ』はメロウ・グルーブ。
どこかリオン・ウェアのような雰囲気も私の好みにぴったりである。
このアルバムで、実は、最も気に入っているのが７『Ｓｏ　Ｍｕｃｈ　Ｌｏｖｅ』である。
イントロのアコースティック・ギターから女性コーラスが延々続きリロイの出番は無い。
リロイの登場はサビのリフレインのコーラスのみ。
ホーンと女性コーラスが主役のようである。
リロイの魅力はこのでしゃばらない『引きの美学』と見つけたり。
忘れてはいけないのがカートムの演奏の素晴らしさ。特にベースラインとストリングスがいい。

それにしても実に気持の良いいいアルバムです。

Donny Hathawayの親友であり、Curtis Mayfield脱退後のThe Impressionsのリードシンガーに抜擢される等の経緯を経てソロシンガーとなったLeroy Hutsonのサードアルバム。メジャーシーンに上ることはなかったが、UKを中心としたクラブDJ、そして日本でもフリーソウルムーヴを経て人気を得る事となった彼の一番の名盤と言ってもいい作品。

Curtom色は強いものの、Donny Hathawayのような、音楽の知識や理論を反映させた、緻密で繊細なアレンジで構成されている。また、Leroy Hutsonの中性的なソフトな声とメロウグルーヴが上手く重なり合い、聴き心地はまさに一級品とも言える。彼の他の作品と比べても全体的にポップな楽曲が多く、安心してお薦め出来る一品とも言える。

"All Because Of You"、"Lucky Fellow"など人気の高いナンバーが揃っているが、僕は3曲目に収録されている"It's Different"という曲に非常に心を打たれた。どこか物寂しげで、それでいて優しい。心の中の繊細な部分に訴えかけてくるような優れた名曲だと覆う。

最近はハトソンのCDがなかなか手に入らなくなってきているような気がします。
ライナーノーツ付で最近知った方にもわかりやすく、取っつきやすいのですがなにぶん音が悪すぎます。
何かの拍子で手に入るような怪しいベスト版に時々良い音源が入っている事もあるので、正規の製品として期待しただけにかなりがっかりしました。

ドラムのシンバル系はつぶれてしまっていますし、ほかの楽器も高音になればなるほど変な音になります。大昔のポータブルレコードプレーヤーのような音を再現したのでしょうか？残念です。

ただ、音の良いハトソンのCD自体がなかなか手に入らない事もあり、買える間にとりあえず確保しておきたいという方にはもちろん即答でお勧めします。
いわゆるニューウェイブソウルの楽曲として傑出した曲を多く聴く事が出来ないのは残念ですが、はずれのないアルバムですので是非入手しておきたいところです。
