　KINGSTON TRIO等のモダン・フォークに影響を受けたTom Dawes（ギター）はペンシルヴェニア州イーストンのラファイエット大学在籍時にDon Dannemann（ヴォーカル）、Earle Pickens（キーボード）、Marty Fried（ドラムス）らとTHE RHONDELLSとして活動していたが、例外に漏れず64年以降はTHE BEATLESに強く触発されてハーモニーにビートをブレンドすることになる。

　65年夏頃にはビート・バンドとしての腕前もかなりのものとなり、たまたまBrian Epsteinの米での活動を手助けしていたNat Weissの目にとまりニューヨークに進出。　グリニッジ・ヴィレッジでの活動を通じてThe Sounds Of SilenceでブレイクしたばかりのSimon＆Garfunkelと知り合いとなり、Tomはベース・プレイヤーとしてツアーにも同行。　この時幸運にもSimonがTHE SEEKERSのBruce Woodleyと共作したRed Rubber Ball、I Wish You Could Be HereのDemoを耳する。　そして、気前よくCloudyを含めた3曲の提供を受けた。

　THE RHONDELLSはWeissの後押しでRed Rubber BallをDemo録音し、Epsteinの口利きでCOLUMBIAからデヴューの運びとなった。　後日Epsteinとの初対面の際にJohn Lennon発案のTHE CYRKLEに変名した。　ところがEarleが医業に進むため脱退。　プロデューサーJohn Simonがあの印象的なハモンド・オルガンを加えて66年4月4日#1(c/w10)が発売され、4月11日NBCテレビHULLABALOOへの出演が効を奏して7月9日には2位まで上昇した。(因みに1位はTHE BEATLESのPaperback Writer)

　このヒットに呼応してショー・ビジネス界の鉄則により6月末に1stLPが発売となり、１stシングルを中心に11曲が収録されている。　やはりシングルA面の#1と#7（2ndシングルc/w4、16位）のクオリティが突出しており寄せ集めの勘は否めないが、前述のSimon作の#5やオリジナルながら#10はいい味を出している。

　本作はこの1stLP(#1~11)にボーナスとして未発表曲#12やDemo（#13~15）をStereoで、LP未収録のシングル（#16~19）をMonoで収録。　音質最高。　やはりCOLUMBIA音源はBob Irwin氏の復刻が一番！　オススメの1枚。

2nd「ネオン」の影に隠れ、地味だ地味だと言われがちな1st。
そして、ベスト版でシングル曲は押さえられるために、ついつい
後回しになりがちな、そんな可哀相な1st。

しかし、キッチリとプロデュースされた2ndとはまた違った
魅力がある。普通のフォークロックも数曲あるから、それが
地味な印象を強くしているってのは確かにあるけど・・

サークルには「アノ声」があるじゃないですか。
それで全て帳消しってことで。

まず、サークル特有の何とも形容しがたい強烈な哀愁。
この曲を忘れてはいませんか？素朴なリコーダーの切ない
「Baby,You're Free」。64年あたりのビートルズの枯れた
味わいにも近い「How Can I Leave Her」。この曲はトレモロが
たっぷりかかったデモテイクも聞き物。

そして言わずもがなの「Turn-Down Day」。この執拗なまでの
哀愁は何?!シタール使っても切なくなってしまうのは、最早
サークルマジック。

ただし、やっぱり地味かも知れない。
ただ、サークルの哀愁が好きなら、「Baby,You're Free」を
聴かないのは、チト勿体無いかなと。
