   北海道の小さな牧場で生まれた競走馬オラシオン。馬主（仲代達矢）の娘（斉藤由貴）は、腹違いの弟（吉岡秀隆）が病床にあることを知り、看病を続ける。彼女に心ひかれる牧場の息子（緒形直人）は、オラシオンを一流の競走馬にすべく丹精込めて育てるが、やがて父（緒形拳）がガンに侵されていることを知らされる…。
   吉川英治賞受賞の宮本輝原作をフジテレビが映画化した大ヒット・ヒューマン感動作。監督は名作TV『北の国から』の杉田成道で、これが映画初監督となった。
 「祈り」の意味をもつオラシオンに、それぞれの人々が、自分の人生の想いをこめながら祈り、その活躍を見守り続けていく姿が感動的。あえて盛り上げることを拒否したクライマックスのレースの展開も、そのシビアさに人生の複雑さを痛感させる効果を生んでいる。（的田也寸志）

単に監督が下手なだけだと思います。小手先感たっぷりです。良い話なのに。ちなみに、腹黒いと感動できないわけではないです。まあ、ゆるゆるで観るのキツイけど!

偽善臭い。こんな白い人間達が実在するとは思えません。ファンタジー映画ですか？これは。私は腹黒い人間なので全く泣けません。感動できません。こんな映画では。公開当時、観に行った劇場で皆泣いてましたが私は一人でポカーンとしてました。「何が哀しいの。この映画の何が」と真剣に考えてしまった覚えがあります。もっとリアルで殺伐としている現実世界を見つめて映画を作るべきではないでしょうか。

そうあって欲しいと願う私のオラシオン（祈り）。

1988年に公開されました。宮本輝原作の「優駿」をもとに、北海道の馬産地で誕生した仔馬がダービー馬にまで成長する過程と、厩舎や馬主などをの周辺の人間ドラマが描かれています。生産牧場の息子として緒形直人さん、生産主として緒形拳さん、調教師として田中邦衛さん、馬主として仲代達矢さん、その娘として斉藤由貴さんなど、結構出演陣としては豪華です。また、ちょい役として当時の現役騎手、加藤和弘騎手や東信二騎手も出演しています。

物語としてはある種のサクセスストーリーで予定調和的な感動を味わえるのですが、何故だか安易に感じられるのはどうしてなのでしょうか？考えてみれば、この映画は当時のフジテレビが盛んに打ち出していた映画路線（南極物語などの動物シリーズですね）の一環でして、テレビの演出をそのまま映画に移植しただけの安易なつくりだからではないでしょうか。特にいちばん盛り上がるべき府中競馬場でのレースの描写は、競馬が本来もっているダイナミズムがまったく伝わって来ず、拍子抜けしてしまいます。まるで炭酸がまったく抜けたサイダーを飲まされた気分です。

原作もよし、俳優陣もよし、なのにこの感覚は、ひとえに監督の責任、演出の稚拙さによるものです。フジテレビも大いに反省するべきですよね。「映画を甘く見るなよ」という感じです。
