1956年に映画化された竹山道雄原作「ビルマの竪琴」を同じ市川崑監督が、前作と同じ故・和田夏十の脚本のもとにカラーで再映画化。ビルマ戦線で投降した日本軍の水島上等兵は、戦争で命を落とした同胞の霊を慰める為に僧となり、現地に残る決意をする。

　「水島〜！一緒に日本へ帰ろう！」という台詞と共に、日本中に感動を巻き起こした名作です。映画館は常に満員。小学生までがそのシーンを真似したものでした。私の近所でも、学校の柵ににしがみついて、外を通る人、誰かまわず「水島〜！」と叫ぶ光景が見られました。

　終戦を間近に控えたビルマ戦線。そこに一つの小隊がありました。隊長は音楽学校を出たばかりの青年（石坂浩二）。終戦を知り、投降した彼らに、連合軍から指令が下ります。「抵抗を続ける仲間を説得せよ」。隊長の命令を受けた水島上等兵（中井貴一）は、移送される仲間と離れ、南部の「三角山」へ向かいます。説得は失敗に終わり戦闘が始まりますが、水島は生還します。

　仲間の元へ戻る途中、水島は無惨な屍を晒す、無数の日本兵を目撃します。遺体を丁重に葬り、敬礼。形見の品は大切に鞄にしまいます。空腹に倒れた水島は、現地の僧侶に助けられますが、すきを見て袈裟を盗んでしまいます。僧侶に化けた水島は、漸く仲間の待つムドン収容所近くへ辿り着くのでした。

　しかし彼はそこで衝撃的な光景を目にします。一体、自分達が戦ってきた意味は何だったのか？　吊り橋の向こうから、懐かしい仲間たちがやって来ます…しかし彼は顔を背け、来た道を引き返して行くのでした。水島上等兵が人として下した、大きな決断とは？　戦争と平和。自分に一体何が出来るのか？　日本映画史上、屈指の名作です。

戦争をテーマにした最近の映画は、爆発シーンや銃撃シーンのリアルさや緊張感が評価されたり、男女の愛情の絆といったものなどが大きく取り上げられたりします。

しかし、この映画はそういった直接的な戦闘の様子や絆については描かれません。

それは、この映画のテーマが、戦争という非日常的な状況から解放されて日常に戻る時、何を目的として人生を歩みはじめて行くべきかという人生の意味を問う求道的な性格を持っているからではないでしょうか。前半部は、その前置きといっても良いのではないかと思います。

最後に水島上等兵が出したのは彼なりの一つの答えです。その迷いと苦悩を、中井貴一は見事に演じてくれました。

こんな人・こんな時におすすめ：世代を超えて、全ての日本人に永遠に語り継ぎたい映画！

私のような戦後何十年もたって
生まれた世代が見ても胸に響く、感動の傑作です。日本はアクションやCGに
頼らずとも、脚本だけでこんなに素晴らしい映画を作ることができる！という
見本のような映画。ストーリーは誰にでも分かりやすく、お涙頂戴系の演出をせずとも、自然に涙がこみあげてきます。日本の懐かしい童謡のメロディー、水島の奏でる琴の音の美しさと、兵士達の素朴な歌声のハーモニーは秀逸。
兵士達の水島を心配する思い、水島の純粋な決心、言葉を覚えるオウムという小道具、どこをとっても素晴らしい、日本映画の最高峰に位置付けられる映画だと思います。
