大映のSFXスペクタル時代劇。戦国時代、城下を守る魔神の伝説があった。謀反によって城主は討たれ、魔神の祠を隠れ家に成長する兄妹が捕らえられ魔神像は破壊されようとする。その時、凄まじい天地地変が起こり巨大魔人が立ち上がる。

無垢な弥生の武人像の額に打ち込まれた鏨（たがね）から血が噴き出すとき、静謐な映像は一変する。無垢な武人のまま動き出すその一瞬。じつは、この刹那こそ、日本映画の精華の一つではないかと思う。

大映京都の映画人は凄い。特撮の本質がミニアチュアのリアルさではないことを何より理解している。しかもそのことをくどくど言い立てず、映像で雄弁に語るのだ。
伊福部の土着的な音楽も、魔神のいいしれぬ恐ろしさをなによりも理解している。
ともかく子供の私には、大魔神がひたすら怖かったのだ。

悪の権化、左馬之助を追って城下へ来た緒形拳、いやさ大魔神の荒れ狂いようを見よ。左から右へ歩く魔神が、急に首を画面のこちらに向け、睨めつけるさま、どこまでも左馬之助を追いつめるさま、魔神から逃げおおせたと一瞬思わせるも、すぐ反対に立っていた恐怖、さらに、悪を滅ぼした後も、だれかれ構わず荒れ狂う凄まじき怒り……。この猛々しい大魔神の姿に、幼い私は何度うなされたことだろうか。
私には「山」「水」「雪」の大魔神三部作のどれもが魅力的で、甲乙つけがたい。わずか１年でたった３作を残して消えたことは、私には日本映画の七不思議である。どうか３作とも観てほしいと切に願う。

知ってるけど見たことのない人が大半だろう。
埴輪顔が鬼の形相に変化するあれである。
ほぼ同時に三作品が制作され、それぞれが違う監督。
一作目の高い評価を断続的に公開された続編が覆し、
一年のみという短いシリーズ作品となった。
今回見たのは特撮の徹底と腰の据わった時代劇が
不思議にマッチした一作目。

想像していたよりずっとシリアスな内容で、
大魔人も決して正義の味方ではない。
悪代官を倒したあとも止まらぬ暴走は村人まで殺し出す始末。
人間の手に負えない超然としたあり方が新鮮だった。
大魔人の中途半端なでかさが怖い。
構図の良いシーン多し。

何度見ても、幾つになっても恐ろしい大魔神です。私は、映画館で見てから悪夢というと大魔神の手に追いかけられるものでした。あらすじは単純な勧善懲悪の話ですが、あの大魔神の無機質的な恐ろしさはなんか全然違うものでした。やはり神の怒りだったのでしょう。ゴシラ、ガメラなどの生物としての恐ろしさではないのです。こわいでー

初めて観たのは小学生のときでした。
何よりも大魔神が歩いて来ると逃げられないなと想像して恐怖を感じていたのが、今、DVDで観て蘇りました。
