１９８５~８６年に細野晴臣氏と細野氏の運営していたレーベルＹＥＮからアルバムをリリースしていたグループ、インテリアのメンバーだった野中英紀氏を中心としたユニットＦ．Ｏ．Ｅ．（＝Ｆｒｉｅｎｄｓ　ｏｆ　Ｅａｒｔｈ）。この名義で発表された１枚のフル・アルバムと２枚のＥＰから選曲され、リマスターされた再発もののベストＣＤ。とにかくＦ．Ｏ．Ｅ．時代は細野氏のディスコグラフィー上でも全くといっていいほど軽視されがちな傾向にあり、氏のボックス・セットではこの時期の作品からは１曲も選ばれなかったし、今回シリーズものの一環としての再発となったものもオリジナル体裁での再発は見送られているのだが（これはおそらく両プロジェクトの監修者である某氏の趣味か？）、細野さんの「ファンク・サイド」が好きな者にとっては決して聞き逃してはならない作品である事は間違いなく、また野中英紀という隠れた才能（実は細野氏は彼こそがこのユニットの首謀者であると発言した事もあった）も再認識できる。音色はあの時代を感じさせる瞬間があるが、今後も絶対埋もれさせてはいけない記録である。

80年代の中ごろから、終わりにかけて。
音楽シーンがつまらなくなって、私は　ジョージクリントン率いるパーラメンツ/ファンカデリックや、アフリカバンバータ、トラブルファンク、パブリックエネミーといったヒップホップ、ファンクを好んで聞いていました。
その中で異彩をはなっていたのが、細野晴臣。

当時私は、このアルバムに収められている、12インチシングル2枚、7インチ、アルバム”Sex,energy&star"をすべて持っていました。
もう、大好き！
ＹＭＯで、アメリカの音楽シーンという厚い壁に阻まれた細野氏ですが、意外なことに、アメリカ黒人ヒップホップ勢に熱い支持を受けます。
デトロイトテクノを引き合いに出すまでもなく、細野氏のグルーヴネスは、このころからすでに同時代としてのファンクを、アメリカのミュージシャン達と海を隔てて、奏でていたのです。
その中で、ジェームスブラウンとの共演は象徴的。
細野氏のクールで立体的なリズムに絡む、ＪＢのシャウトは、なんだか本人による本人のパロディみたいでおもしろく、ビートを強調してさらにリミックスすれば、いまでもクラブミュージックとして十分通用すると思います。

ほとんど誰にも評価されなかった、細野氏のファンクネスですが、後のビルラズヴェルとのコラボで、アンビエントというフィールドを取り入れ、しっかり落とし前をつけています。
