   手塚治虫、初期のSF漫画を映画化したアニメ『メトロポリス』。製作期間5年、最先端の技術を駆使し、総作画枚数15万枚を投入した本作がみせるのは、壮大なスケールで描かれた未来都市の姿である。

   どのシーンを切り取っても画になるハイクオリティな作画はもちろんだが、手塚が原作で1ページを使って描いたモブ（群集）シーンを再現した映像はとにかく圧巻。緻密に描かれたリアルな背景とレトロな雰囲気を残した手塚キャラたちが融合することによって、温かみをもった世界が展開される。

   物語は、文明の絶頂に達し感情をもつロボットを生み出すまでになった人類と、その先にある悲しみという原作のテーマを踏襲しつつ、オリジナルのストーリーを再構築する形で作られている。脚本を担当したのは『AKIRA』の大友克洋。監督は『鉄腕アトム』の演出もした、りんたろう。豪華スタッフの共演で実現した文字どおり超大作アニメである。（井上新八）

まさに賛否まっぷたつに分かれる作品でしょう。
確かに各キャラクターの背景が希薄で時間が短いのは否めません。
それが星4つの主な理由です。
ですが、この作品はそもそも「泣ける」必要はないと思うのです。
人間の驕りと、それがもたらす不理解と終局。
人は有史以来、ずっとそんな繰り返しを続けてきました。

この作品を通じて感じるのは「泣ける」とか「泣けない」ではなくて、むしろある種の虚しさでしょう。
いつからか何でも出来ると思い込んでいる僕達のような一人一人の人間が抱える驕りと、
それを客体化したときの虚無感・危機感がこの作品のメインテーマの1つであるように感じるのです。

最後のカタルシスの中流れる、レイ＝チャールズの"Can't Stop Loving You"はそのやりきれなさを十分に伝えてくれます。
あまりに示唆的で強烈なラストシーンだと思いました。

ストーリーも音楽/選曲も素晴らしい佳作です。
確かに最高傑作と呼べないのは残念です。直感で言えば本当に素晴らしいと思うのですが…。
娯楽作品としてはイマイチと感じる方もいらっしゃるとは思いますが、

映画を通じて考えることが苦にならない方には自信を持ってお勧めします。

映像美にこだわって作っているのだろうが、個人的にはCGの使いすぎは違和感を感じてしまう。それでも最後の崩壊シーンの映像と音楽には今までのアニメに無かった新しさを感じて衝撃を受けた。びっくりした。あれを観るだけでも一見の価値はあります。

原作をすでに読んでいたので映画を見てびっくり！全然違う、あくまで手塚さんのメトロポリスは原案にすぎないといった感じでしたが。とてもおもしろい映画でした。ＤＶＤでは「日本語字幕」がでるので聴力に障害の方でも楽しめるアニメ作品になっています。
映画で見てファンになった方には少し高いけどメモリアルＢＯＸはお勧めですよ。
