「故宮の至宝」全七巻はどれも素晴らしい内容で楽しめるが、その中でこの第七巻は白眉である。その理由は第七巻に乾隆帝のコレクションと歴代皇帝の玉手箱を含むことにある。六十年に渡る親政において、乾隆帝は中国の歴史の中で最大規模に領土を拡大するだけではなく、文化・芸術を奨励し散逸した中国の至宝を国中から集めた。漢民族を征服した満州人からなる清王朝が、漢民族としての正当な王朝であることを示すのが目的のひとつであったと言われるが、乾隆帝自身が漢民族の文化・芸術を愛したことも事実であったことが、この記録から伺える。中でも乾隆帝が描かせた自画像は、数多くの至宝に囲まれているが、それらの至宝の一つ一つが実物として故宮に保管されており、自画像にある描かれた至宝と実物の至宝が対比されて示されると、今更のように当時の様子が目に浮かぶ。また皇帝の玉手箱の中で最も有名な翠玉白菜には二匹のコオロギがとまっているが、実物はガラスケースの中で近くから見えないため良く分からないのに対して、この映像では二匹ともはっきりと見ることが出来る。全七巻を一巻ずつ買ってみたい人は、まず第七巻から始めるのが良い。
