　‘７７年発表の１st。’９９年になって突如２ndが発表された。
G、Keyを２名ずつ擁する７人編成の大所帯で、そこから連想される通りの、ゴージャスなサウンドで、テクニカルな演奏を披露している。

　しかし、よく練られたアレンジと、叙情的でシンフォニックな美しいメロディが、緻密に計算され、単純な大仰さではなく、効果的な演出を忠実に表現するこだわりが、はっきりと感じ取れる。
　荒っぽく、チープなテノール風Voが好みを分けそうなところと、やや似たような曲が多いが、クオリティが高く、名盤に相応しい内容である。

的確なドラムのリズムと、ピアノのリリカルな響きが特に印象的であるが、時折効果的に演奏されるフルートの調べや、幻想的なロングトーンギター、ハモンド＆ムーグサウンドとが相まって、最高の煌めきをみせている。ツイン・ギター、ツイン・キーボード、ベース、ドラム、ヴォーカルの7人編成から紬出されるメロディアスかつ華麗な楽曲は、イタリアンロックの良い部分のみを抽出・昇華させてつくった蒸留酒のようにエッセンスに満ち溢れている。

ジャケに表された繊細でリリカルなテーマ、それを裏切らない曲調。
演奏技術も、バンドとしてのアンサンブルも、曲の構成も、いかにも正統派を思わせる。
写真がオッサンばっかりだったり、声がオッサンだったりするのは愛嬌のうちか。
ＰＴＡも大推薦のお利口さん、といった印象である。

だが、イタリアンロックというと、ボクはやはりどうにも情熱や破綻を求めてしまう。
その意味では、本作本編は精緻な設計図からの逸脱を見事に感じさせず、少々物足りない。


とはいえ、ボクは結構このお利口さんを愛聴している。
一つには、曲調や演奏があまりにそつがないため、ＢＧＭに流しておくと心地が良いからだ。
しかしもう一つ、ボクが本作を聴く最大の理由は、お利口さんな長い本編を終えた後に来る、
ボーナストラックの Nove luna を聴きたいがためであったりする。

このボートラ曲、めちゃくちゃ癖が強く、本当に同じバンドなのかと一瞬疑ってしまう。
闇鍋で、個々においしい素材をその場のノリだけでまとめてぐつぐつ煮込んじゃったような、
小学生とかならもう、味とかに関係なくそれだけで楽しくてどうしようもなくなっちゃうような、
そんな、熱に浮かれたような無邪気なハチャメチャ感が、この曲には露骨すぎるほどにある。

はじめて聞いた時、この曲が終わらないでずっと続いてほしいと思った。
実際、収録の限界がなければ、この曲はいつまでも続いていたのだと、ボクは信じる。


設計図を内圧で歪ませる程の情熱を、その美しさを、このバンドは確かに持っていたのだ。
あるいはこれが設計図通りならば、当の設計図そのものが既に歪んでしまっているのだろう。
ならば、一流の建築家があえて歪んだ設計図を書いてしまった、その衝動をこそ評価したい。

そんな彼らがお利口さんぶっている本編を聴くと、なんとも愛しい気持ちになってしまう。
