ポリーニによるこのシューベルトとシューマンの幻想曲は若きポリーニの最高の演奏だ。この奥の深い巨大な曲を完璧な技巧と表現力によってダイアモンドのような輝きを引き出している。特にシューマンは絶対聴いてほしい。ポリーニの演奏を無味乾燥とバカにした人はこれを聴くとよい。表現が無味乾燥でどうやって音楽が成り立つというのか!!

シューベルトのさすらい人幻想曲〜〜〜前作（ショパンの12+12の練習曲）の衝撃を裏切らない完璧な演奏で、
極度の緊張感が味わえます。元来地味なこの曲を、
ここまできらびやかに弾いてのけた当時のポリーニの才能には、脱帽するしかありません。
シューマンの幻想曲〜〜〜曲の構成がかなり複雑で、
冷静な解釈と高度な演奏テクニックを要するこの作品は、
下手に弾いてしまうと野暮ったい演奏になリがちですが、
さすがのポリーニはこの難曲を一気呵成にサラリと弾いてのけてしまっています。
きらきらと輝く音のシャワーに酔いしれてみてください！

1973年11月ローマ RCAスタジオで録音。
ポリーニのレコーディングの変遷を追いかけてみると実に面白い。
ショパンは、エチュードOp.10＆25（全24曲）・・・1972年→24の前奏曲Op.28・・・1974年6・7月ミュンヘン→ポロネーズ集（第1番~第7番）・・・1975年11月ウイーン
シューマンは、ピアノ・ソナタ第1番・幻想曲・・・1973年4月ミュンヘン・ヘルクレスザール→ずっと飛んで交響的練習曲とアラベスク・・・1981年ミュンヘン・ヘルクレスザール
となるわけだが、面白いのはノーノ作品を1973年10月ミュンヘンでシェーンベルグのピアノ作品集を1974年5月ミュンヘンと本作の録音を挟むようにして録音していることだ。20世紀音楽のオーラを浴びてから舞い戻るように古典へと取り組む。その繰り返しをすることでポリーニは感性をより鋭いものにしていったと感じられる。
さて本作はポリーニ初のフランツ・シューベルト作品の録音である。曲はさすらい人幻想曲とD845のイ短調ソナタだった。ポリーニを知る人なら誰でもやっぱりと頷く選曲だ。予想にたがわずピアノが響きっぱなしでもはや異次元とも言えるレベルの『さすらい人』である。完璧な10指のコントロールを誇る、ヴィルトーゾ、マウリツィオ・ポリーニであっても若きエネルギーを持ってしか表現し得えなかった曲だったと今聴くと思う。
ただし、ポリーニは再びシューベルトを封印し、次に封印を解くのは1983年のシューベルトのピアノ・ソナタD958・959・960ということなる。ここでも10年の月日が流れることになるのだ。マウリツィオ・ポリーニは決して妥協することのない人なのだと思う。自分の残すものに。
